I also changed my filter to a LN screw on filter with magnets catching that glittery stuff you are talking about.

Suggestion

I figured I would change the tensioners to give myself a little more longevity as some had suggested the glitter could be from my chains.

I figured the oil needs to run through it for a minute, but I brought it up to temp and it’s still pretty loud.

With the old OEM filter, just use shears to cut it apart to see the debris.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

So I’ve been getting my 08 987 Cayman S ready for spring. It hasn’t been started in 3-4 months. I replaced the ims tensioner and bank 1 tensioner, as well as the water pump and thermostat. I started it up today and it’s loud! I figured the oil needs to run through it for a minute, but I brought it up to temp and it’s still pretty loud. I know my chain guides are going because I found black plastic in my last oil change. I also had a good amount of glitter with it. I had the clutch done recently and they took off the dust seal on the ims bearing and said it looked good. I figured I would change the tensioners to give myself a little more longevity as some had suggested the glitter could be from my chains. This is what is sounded like coming up to temperature. This is my first P car and I’m too nervous to drive it at this point so I figured I would reach out! Any help would be greatly appreciated! - YouTube Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube. youtube.com

POST 2Original post

My engine at idle and mid rpm have chain noise before changing to Motul from Mobil 1 FS 5W 40 or even 5W-50. I did not like the chain noise and no longer hear it. I also changed my filter to a LN screw on filter with magnets catching that glittery stuff you are talking about. A magnetic drain plug will help determining if any major metal activity is happening but you will also see small metal filaments around the magnet. I cut the filter apart with a metal cutter now. With the old OEM filter, just use shears to cut it apart to see the debris. The piston skirts have a plastic like coating that can be the start of bore scoring. This plastic like coating protects from metal on metal contact which causes oil usage, ticking noise and scoring. Scoring is a one way street that you do not want to be part of. Motul is expensive but not nearly as finding bore scoring. I change my oil twice a year or every 3500 miles.
