I don't know the year of your 540i so I've used '06 540 #s which gets better gas mileage than older models per the EPA.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">I guess I’m wondering about my real world use of the Cayman. In my 540i the trip to <city w:st="on"> <place w:st="on">Denver</place> </city> can be done with no stops. The Cayman is going to require at least two it appears given the spacing of gas stations. That is another 20 to 30 minutes. A couple of times a year I get up at 0’dark thirty and make a 13 hour drive to Santa Barbara ( I know that sounds strange to our British, European, and Hawaiian members but it isn’t difficult). That usually takes three fill-ups. The Cayman looks like six or seven or another hour plus on a 13 hour trip. <p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"> <p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">When it is my turn to go to the grocery I usually have to return with six full paper sacks. I don’t see where they fit in the Cayman. In fact one 12-pack of toilet paper may not fit. <p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"> <p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">From my country location it is a gallon drive just to get to the gas station. It seems like I'll be there a lot. <p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"> <p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">So is this just my impractical toy for runs up the mountain roads and an occasional autocross? I guess so but if not for the looks I probably should have chosen better given my use. Fortunately I have other cars for the other jobs so I hope I don't become angry at the frequent need to visit gas stations.

POST 2Original post

At 16.9 gallons and 27-28 mpg (highway), the range doesn't seem that bad, does it ? Even conservatively, you should be able to get 375 highway miles out of it.

POST 3Original post

Wow... you must have a hollow leg - after say five+ hours driving I'm more than ready to get out and stretch, relieve myself, buy some gas, and get some coffee. Doesn't matter what car, I would need to stop. And if my wife is with me I might be lucky to go 60 minutes, so not much of a concern to me.

POST 4Original post

Santa Fe, there's plenty of room for groceries! No problem with my Boxster (remember, there's two trunks) and Cayman has more room. Plus, you'll probably be glad to make an extra pit stop or two on a long journey, just to stretch your legs. Only problem with picking up groceries is they usually end up every which direction after the trip home!

POST 5Original post

I've gotten 400 miles out of a tank of gas in the 987S but that was almost all highway driving. sculpture.net is right, after so many hours it is time to make a pit stop, even just to stretch and talk to a man about a horse. 400 miles at 80 miles/hour is 5 hours straight, seems like plenty of range in the Cayman to me...

POST 6Original post

SF: I guess I must be missing something. I don't know the year of your 540i so I've used '06 540 #s which gets better gas mileage than older models per the EPA. An '06 540 (like prior years) has a fuel capacity of 18.5 gal & an EPA rating of 15/23. The Cayman S has a fuel capacity of 16.9 gal & an EPA rating of 19/27. Do the math for a theoretical range w/a 1.5 gal reserve @ the EPA highway mpg: 540 goes 391 miles vs. CS' 416 miles. Of course, my right foot has always prevented me from achieving the EPA highway mileage, but I'll bet you'll go just as far, if not further from a tankful of gas in a CS given similar driving habits. BTW, you will, of course, also save enough on each fill-up to buy a 12 pack of toilet paper which will fit nicely in the front trunk. /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/beer2.gif

POST 7Original post

Many races are won and lost in the pits and the crews practice. You have to cut your refueling time down to 5 minutes if you are in such a rush How far off course do you have to travel to find gas? Without a minivan full of kids that all have to go to the bathroom 15 minutes for fuel seems like an awfully long time.[/quote]

POST 8Original post

From A medical Point of view, you shouldn't drive more than 2 hours without a 30 minute break so the Cayman would actually be safer. I feel that the fact that the Cayman will make every journey an event to be savoured, should also keep you more alert, again adding to the safety factor. I drive quite alot and have owned an M3 and a Lotus Elise as well as long distance cruisers. I can say that you are much less likey to fall asleep in the sporting cars. Therefore a shorter range + excitement = safety.

POST 9Original post

Y'all are probably right, relax and enjoy. It is more an issue of limited, open (and acceptable if my wife is along) stations out herethan the Cayman's range. If range approaches 400 miles I'm good.

POST 10Original post

What about installing another gas tank in the front trunk? I bet you could get a 10-15 fuel cell in the front trunk, patch it into the main line and greatly extend your range PLUS balance the car more 50-50 in terms of weight distribution! /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/tounge_smile.gif
