What's the preferred product/solution for cleaning and polishing the aged headlights on a 987? Specifically, I've got Xenon lights (order code 601) with washers (order code 288), if that makes a difference.
I use Griot's Garage for all of my car cleaning needs. They make a headlight restorer.

If they're cloudy or yellowed? Sandpaper. You need to wet sand to completely remove the old coating Then you need to repolish and then recoat with new
UV protectant
or they'll just yellow again. The
Cerakote
headlight kit worked pretty well for me. It had almost everything I needed, was pretty easy to use, and only cost $17.

A few notes:
Don't try to do the job with the headlights in the car, pull the headlights out. It's not that hard and makes the job much easier
The Cerakote instructions say to apply the coating after the last sanding step. Based on recommendations I found that you get better results if you do the sanding steps and then polish with something like Plast-X or Novus #2 plastic polish, then apply the final coating
Avery useful post.. I was thinking of buying this kit for my wife's
Lexus
- the
headlights
were done once and have crudded up again. Glad to hear it works well. Her's just have to look good enough to trade-in or sell the car, we're thinking of getting one SUV to replace the two we now own.. that means driving the
Boxster
a bit more, but that's a hardship I'm willing to take on..
I used this stuff. It lasts a few months. I polish with this, buff dry and put a coat of wax on top to help slow the oxydation. It's cheap and works well.

As I said I just put a coat of wax after polishing but I will try it and see if any better than the was I use.
As far as waxes go, I have tried several ... Meguairs #26, Mother's Carnauba Wax, Meguiars Synthetic Wax and Turtle Wax Hybrid Wax. The
turtle wax hybrid
lasts the longest but I put two coats. Basically, I polish the light, takes 5-10 minutes per light depending on how dirty. Put a coat of Hybrid Wax on the light and let it cure for 24 hours. It takes a minute per light to do. the next day, If I haven't driven the car, I put a 2nd coat on and presto done. If I had to drive the car the next day, I just wipe it clean with some quick detailer and put the 2nd coat. This 2nd coat seems to last longest especially on my Honda which I leave outside 24/7.
3M Finess it with foam waffle pad.. get a feel for the speed preferably lower and don’t sit on one spot for two long as it is just plastic…after that, chemical guys black light wax… this shouldn’t take but a few minutes… if it needs sanding see above
I haven't done mine yet, but I plan to go with this product when I do:
2K 2in1 Headlight Clear - SprayMax
It's a coating with a 2 part mix, so it should hold up better than most waxes or other one-part coatings. Only downside is that its a little dangerous as it contains Isocyanates, so you need to take similar precautions to what you'd do if you were painting a car with 2 part paints and clear coats.
That stuff looks like a pretty good thing to try. Probably a lot harder to apply well than the
Cerakote
stuff (which is super easy) but perhaps more durable.
You really want to use something permanent or semi-permanent to reseal the lenses. Polycarbonate is UV sensitive and will degrade with sun exposure. When the
headlights
are manufactured they have a UV protective coating on them, but it eventually yellows and fades that's what you're sanding off when you restore them. Wax isn't going to be durable or protective enough.
I used the Sylvania Headlight restore kit. Brought mine back to good as new. Having a rotary buffer helps too.
Protip: take your
headlights
out completely instead of trying to do it on the car.
Agree that wax won’t do the trick against the sun [emoji274]. I used this on others cars. Be careful to not apply with an overly wet wipe (I rung it out)

I have used the spraymax headlight clear on my Tundra and it came out great. I removed the
headlights
and then sanded it with 3 different grit sandpaper until I removed all the yellow uv coating and wiped it well with alcohol before applying the spraymax. When applying, use 2 light coats and 1 heavier coat. Also make sure to apply in a well ventilated area and where a respirator.
