Again, this isn't necessarily the car I will buy, but figured it's a good question to ask since this may be a scenario I run into again in the search for a 911.

My question is would this be a car that you would stay away from at all costs due to a potential risk of multiple lingering/ongoing issues due to the original engine failure and subsequent rebuild, or would you view this as a safe buy for a potentially good deal since the engine is relatively new, along with the parts replaced during the rebuild?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I'm looking to buy my first 911 and recently saw a 2005 at a dealership that is around the right price. This isn't necessarily the one I will buy, but I thought the scenario was interesting and wanted to get the take of the members on this forum who likely have more knowledge than myself. Scenario: This 2005 997 was a victim of the IMS issue which resulted in an engine rebuild/replacement. The original engine failed around 39k miles and there are 61k total miles on the car, so about 22k miles on the new engine. All work was done by Porsche. Again, this isn't necessarily the car I will buy, but figured it's a good question to ask since this may be a scenario I run into again in the search for a 911. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

When Porsche installs another engine, it is a factory reman engine, not one rebuilt by the shop techs. The factory reman is every bit as good as the engine that came in the car when new, with the same weaknesses and strengths.

POST 3Original post

I would think nothing of buying this car with a replacement engine. As JFP said -- just as good/bad as the original. Actually this engine could be a tad better then possibly the original 2005 engine depending on whether the first one had the upgraded porsche IMS bearing. However it will not be thusly third party upgradeable. Mike

POST 4Original post

I would feel pretty confident about buying it.
