When I purchased my
Boxster
the PO included a short shifter new in package. I looked it up and it was a generic eBay $50 shifter, so I did not think much of it. I saw installation videos that showed that you have to destroy the stock bushings to remove the stock shifter, and I wasn't sure that I wanted to do that to install some Chinesium part.
But, the shifter in the car felt sloppy, and I had too much time on my hands yesterday, so I decided to undertake it. Took the center console out and found that it wasn't the stock shifter, but a different short shifter made by Schnell (that I see priced from $150-$200). Some bushing on that shifter appeared to have worn, though, because it was wiggly where it shouldn't be wiggly. So even though this was a more expensive bit, I performed the swap. Plus I didn't have to break the stock plastic bushings - they had already been broken!
There is a bolt that goes through the yoke and the shift lever, and that is where the "wiggly" part was.
Here is the new shifter.
You can see that the bolt through the yoke and shift lever is buffered by rubber washers. This shifter feels MUCH more precise than the old one. BUT -
A little bit of a learning curve with the new shifter.
The old one canted away from the driver, the new one towards the driver - it essentially moves the shift pattern over one. Third on the new shifter is where first was on the old one. But the learning curve was short.
Maybe it's setup to allow the central pivot bolt to be removed and then the shifter flipped t allow for left or right hand drive cars???
I was thinking exactly the same.
Strange. I don't recall the original shifter(nor the
GT3
I currently use) to be canted at all - at least a noticeable amount. I don't think the
Numeric
SS is either.
I suppose they could be adjusted to slant in either direction. The alignment tool centers it.
.
Could be. The Schneider shifter advertising copy says it is canted ten degrees to keep it aligned like a stock shifter.
With sales on both sides of the pond I guess reversibility is smart.
I like where the new one is just a bit of a learning curve. I could have probably reversed that one and had the same alignment.
Yes, I have the same shifter and to account for RHD and LHD you just flip it around BUT, yours is already in the correct LHD position (unlike your Schnell one)
