Reported cause

The problem is caused by lack of oil to the chain, the chain stretches and overloads individual teeth, the teeth wear, then fatigue break off, the others overload and eventually the chain slips, bends all the inlet valves, sometimes destroys the tensioner and occasionally breaks the tensioner lugs off the heads.

I had mine done at Hartech at the 96k service, expensive job ( cams alone are £700 )but it was very well done and the car has run like clockwork ever since.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I take it you drive a 944S2, in which case it's most likely from the camshafts as they are well known for shedding teeth once the cam chain stretchs. It makes it worse it you put a new chain on wothout changing the camshafts, has this been done do you know? What sort of mileage has your car done? I had mine done at Hartech at the 96k service, expensive job ( cams alone are £700 )but it was very well done and the car has run like clockwork ever since. Get in touch with Barry or Grant at Hartech and they will help you out. www.hartech.u-net.com/ Andy

POST 2Original post

Oh dear that sounds nasty - I wasn't aware that the camshafts needed changing as well as the cam chain/tensioner! My car has done 88,000 miles so its probably due to have the tensioner checked...

POST 3Original post

My S had to have the camshafts changed, as well as the chain and tensioner, at about 98k miles by Hartech.

POST 4Original post

Another brilliant piece of Porsche engineering. You should pre-empt the problem by replacing the chain every 48,000 miles, no matter what anyone else (i.e. Porsche) tell you. Cams are around £500 each from memory, but we usually have used ones available if required.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the information...

POST 7Original post

'Cos it would have been an even more unreliable proposition I've had both an S2 and an 8v Turbo, so I'm not talking out of my botthom this time

POST 8Original post

Thom, Saw your post on Rennlist saying the cam teeth were intact. Any idea where the broken bits have come from?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Marcus, Yes, I'm quite happy things turned this way out! Unfortunately I still have no idea where these bits of pinion teeth could come from. I asked a former OPC mechanic today but he had no idea apart from the camshafts. What's more, the plans of the engine do not give away anything; a friend thought about the oil pump but since we don't know how it's made inside we can't really tell. I will keep you informed if we manage to dig something out of it >> Edited by Thom on Thursday 12th December 21:29

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry, back on top. For those interested here are some pictures of my camshafts, with pinion teeths intact:

POST 11Original post

Just out of interest Thom, what camera are you using for your shots? The 1 on your profile is nice and sharp.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

These pictures were not taken by myself but by a friend. As far as I can remember what he told me his digital camera is "not very good". ... Now you talk about it I know what I should have written on my Christmas wish list edited: the one on my profile was taken by another chap >> Edited by Thom on Wednesday 25th December 08:47

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just done the oil on the car and found out some pieces of broken pinion teeth in the old oil; So far I have no clue if it could be anything else than pieces of broken teeth from the camshaft(s?) since I haven't had the time to remove the cam cover yet. (FYI a picture of another car here ) Any thoughts on any other possible cause?
