Supposedly just not turning on the key with the seat disconnected will solve this problem, but I choose to take the safe route and disconnect the battery as you suggest.

I think the only time I'll notice it is when I'm using cruise on the highway and try and tuck my feet up near the seat.

Check the size of the washers, you don't want to end up with the last one being too small for the the last bolt.

You disconnect the side of the battery connected to the chassis (negative on most every car made in the last 30+ years) so that if your wrench should touch the chassis while you are loosening the battery clamp you won't cause a short and arc weld your craftsman to the body or cause the battery to explode.

I received a fire extinguisher with mounting bracket for Christmas from my wife for the CS. All the connectors to install it in front of my drivers seat are present and the job doesn't look very difficult. I do have one question however? When I remove the powered seat will I get an error code? Should I remove the positive side of the battery before removing the powered seat?
I have received the error code before when my 6'5" son got in and pushed the seat back against the engine compartment. So, I'm just wondering if removing the seat will produce and error code and will I have to take it to the dealer to have the error cleared?
Thanks for and help or suggestions.
Yes, if you remove the seat (unplug the airbag sensor) with the car still powered you will get an error and airbag light on the dash (I know from experience) that must be cleared by the dealer.
Supposedly just not turning on the key with the seat disconnected will solve this problem, but I choose to take the safe route and disconnect the battery as you suggest. I did this just yesterday and it works fine.
Cheers,
Thanks loads. When I first thought about this it seemed like a no brainer, then it dawned on me that the electronics might be an issue. Thanks for coming back to me so quickly.
What kind of kit did you get?
I found the OEM bracket for $85, but no extinguisher to go in it. (Porsche will only sell them WITH the car now) I'd liek to know what extinguisher will fit in the OEM bracket.
Pics of the install would be awesome when you are done.
I'll get some photos when I actually it. Probably tomorrow. I purchased the bracket for the 2007 Cayman S from Performance Products and the fire extinguisher is from Griot's. The bracket is made so that it will accept the holder from any of the manufacturers of fire extinguishers. The snap release is attached to a standard backing plate which bolts to the bracket from Perf. Prod. Interestinglly, the fire extinguisher is about $50 and the bracket is close to $100 with the shipping. Nice looking piece though. I will get some photos when I do it.
To add, you'd want to remove the negative side as opposed to the positive terminal in your post, what with our cars being negatively earthed.
Good luck with the install.
Regards
Pop
I had no codes when I removed my seats and put them back to install sub belt brackets. I just made sure never to put the key in during the procedure.
So, Krokodil, if you took your seat out, does that mean you put the new GT3 seats in?
Why negative side of battery?
Hi Popolou,
Can you explain why the negative side of the battery should be disconnected, not the positive side? I've always done the negative side too, but I can't recall why.
yeah, sorry. I was making reference to the fact that the steering wheel kept getting in the way when I was trying to remove the seat from the car. I did complete the install and I plan to write up an application for it but haven't gotten around to it due to other committments. In the interim a few notes: The safety bolts that holds the seats in place are reversed torx socket, size E12. I was not able to find it at the local outlets like Pep Boys and Napa but ran down the local Snap-On guy as he was making his rounds and was able to pick one up from him for $3.00. I guessing that Northern Tool or Sears might have one as well. I did not remove the battery terminal based on Naybor's comments and I did not insert the key during the process and I got no codes or negatives. However, there is a need to move the seat back and forth several times during the process of removing the seat and then installing it again. I began to worry that my battery would run down and actually the last time that I needed to move the seat it wouldn't move. Fortunately, I was at the point where I was torquing the seats down and was able to use the key, etc. The car started right up and then the seat was operable. I suppose one could manage the power loss while moving the seats for removal but shutting it down before you unplug the wiring harness. Perhaps I was getting a little low on battery. It might make sense to use a battery backup device while doing this. Incidentally, the seats are to be torqued to 45 lbs.
More later.
Folks, I have finished a short article on the install which is in the articles/miscellaneous section of the site. Its called Fire Extinguisher installation. Hope this is useful to somebody and thanks for your help and suggestions.
You are correct in saying that PCA requires 2.5 lb. size. This mount will accomodate either size. Also, the Brey-Krause bracket will fit either side unless you have manual seats in which case it will fit only the driver's side.
Devsol - thanks for posting the article on your install.
Not to highjack the thread but . . . I was going to install the same bracket for my seats, but now I've decided to order racing buckets for the track that go on fixed mounts. Does anyone know if there is a B-K or other model bracket that would fit on just the seat mounts ?
Devsol - This is a very well written article and the pictures look good. There can be no question that you are from the Peach State as you are obviously both a gentleman AND a scholar.
Shellshocked
I got the OEM mounting bracket installed in my CS a few weeks ago thinking there were be no issues. But there is a problem of sorts. If you order the car with the bracket installed, you get this really neat looking Gloria (UK) extinguisher with it for $150. But, it is a 1kg (2.2 lb.), not a 2.5 lb. as PCA requires. See:
http://www.gloria.co.uk/utcfs/ws-1198/Assets/P1GM P2GM.pdf
.
It's the one one the left. The problem is that the OEM bracket is designed specifically for this bottle, i.e. a plastic shell in the shape of the 1kg Gloria. However, after shopping around, I found at Walmart!!!! a 2.5 lb. Kidde Marine extinguisher (ABC) that fits reasonably well. If perfection is an issue, the shell could be trimmed out with a dremel or something similar. Without doing that, the Kidde sticks up a little at one end, but so much as to be a problem for me. A comparable halon extinguisher may fit better as they may be a bit smaller.
Seamus,
The Halotron is EPA approved and is available in two sizes. 1.4 lbs which is 2 5/8 x 93/4 tall, the 2/5 lb unit is 3" x 141/4". Page 40 in the Griot's catalog. There are others that are available from Performance Products and similar catalogs as well. Good luck
I also read someplace or heard in the last couple of days (might have been at dinner the other night with Gator Bite here in LV) that most PCA regions require a metal bracket, and the OEM bracket is primarily plastic, and thus would technically be disallowed.

It's purely a safety issue. You disconnect the side of the battery connected to the chassis (negative on most every car made in the last 30+ years) so that if your wrench should touch the chassis while you are loosening the battery clamp you won't cause a short and arc weld your craftsman to the body or cause the battery to explode.
I triple checked and looks like factory bracket and factory extinguisher are not good enough for the PCA events. Factory bracket is plastic and they require metal.
Our sponsor here actually has pretty good price on the 2.5lb (PCA DE required size at least in my region) halon extinguisher and bracket that comes out to about $237 shipped.

- this is the link directly to extinguishers, see part #: 883474. I chose to go for halon rather than a dry agent, since the difference in cost is just worth it to me. Plus the unit is rechargeable.
Fire Extinguisher Mounts and Other Porsche® Parts and Porsche® Accessories by Performance Products
- that is where the bracket page is. I think you need to have Porsche Cayman selected in the car selector to get the right part.
I just did mine today. I got the Performance Products mount and the Halotron 2.5 extinguisher. It went pretty smoothly- thanks for the installation article. Took a little over an hour. A few notes: I found the Torx socket at my local Advance Auto. Came in a set of four (under $10), but I'll use them someday. I have sport seats, I think it went easier without all the power gizmos underneath. I didn't disconnect anything electric except for the one yellow plug connector under the seat- no problems. Check the size of the washers, you don't want to end up with the last one being too small for the the last bolt. A dry fit of all the pieces helps get it in your mind what's going to happen, and checks all the threads. My main problem was getting the seat back into the car. It's a little bigger with the bracket on the front and I put a few paint scratches on the corner of the threshold while wrestling it in. Put a blanket or something down across the threshold while you get the seat back in the car. Doh! Look at how the neck of the extinguisher fits into the bracket- there are two slots machined into the neck of the bottle. That's what fit's into the guide, not the round part of the neck.
I was afraid the extinguisher would be in the way bolted to the front of the seat, but it's not too bad. I think the only time I'll notice it is when I'm using cruise on the highway and try and tuck my feet up near the seat. Hope I never have to use it. Good luck!
So where can I get a tube of Arctic Silver touch-up paint?
Fire Extinguisher bracket
Since I'm new to the forum and a new sponsor I thought I would chime in. The reason we made our FEB to fit on the front seat rails is to make it easily accessible and to fit the sports adaptive seats.
This mounting takes about 5 minutes 10 if your not mechanically inclined, basically two bolts on and off. You could remove it for the street if desired.
We make the mount to accommodate nearly any fire extinguisher.

Welcome to the club.
Question for you. Does the presence of the fire extinguisher on your mount limit the motion of the seat at all?
I have a Brey Krausse, and had I seen yours before I bought I probably would have bought yours instead. Yours appears to tuck up under the seat much more closely and it looks like it's a lot easier to install. Mine required the removal of the seat.
I think I could live with a little loss of the forward movement. My seat is maybe two clicks from all the way back. Something else worth noting for any potential new customers, the BK does flex and/or vibrate a little over serious bumps. The mount you are showing looks like it would be more solid.
Thanks for the info.
Then you would have no problems with seat movement.
Yes you are correct with the vibration as well. The mount I produce sits directly on the floor of the car and there is no movement at all.
We now stock the Halguard 1.5 and 2.5 fire extinguishers if you want a clean agent for your mount.
Sorry to hear about your scratches. Hopefully you'll be able to polish them out. I've had this BK setup for a 6 months or so. I've never found it to be in my way and it moves with the seat. It's been a fine product for me and if I wanted I could get the larger bottle with no problem. Did you have any problems with the bolt/hole lineup on the brackets. I had one that I had to straighten out with a drill and all. The nut was attached to the plate just out of alighnment. Otherwise I think it looks nice on the beige interior background. I hope I never have to use it.
Again, one of the benefits to our bracket is it has many holes to configure your extinguisher. You can justify it left right or center. It holds 1.5 and 2.5lb extinguishers (which we stock). We have sold hundreds and have received no problems. We only sell Halo clean agent extinguishers as well.
In other words our bracket does not require you to "re-drill or drill out any holes"
