Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
When turning the key on, the gage goes like check, check, check from top to bottom but it doesn't stop anywhere to show the actual level.
Leading evidence: 'Check from top' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check from top' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The book says to check the oil when the engine is cold.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The book says to check the oil when the engine is cold. Went to check the oil level on my '06 CS and it took 25 minutes. Seems awfully long. Am I missing something?
Did you have the ignition on and then back off or start the car and turn it back off before checking? If so, then it will take up to 30 minutes to check the level.
Sure you weren't trying to remove the engine cover, remove the intake and take a stick and do a manual measurement?
Thirty minutes would be good in that instance!
In the two months I've had my
Cayman
, it almost always shows oil level in 5 or 6 seconds. But once, it said it would take 30 minutes, so I just skipped the check. I probably, on that one occasion, did as K-Man S suggests (just screwed up the sequence).
I believe my oil level gage is bad.
When turning the key on, the gage goes like check, check, check from top to bottom but it doesn't stop anywhere to show the actual level. Is that the way it should work?
Do I have to guess where the level is at the top - first check?
I've seen the pictures on the manual and here, but my gage does not stop at a level and stay iluminated/white at all.
Could it be that the engine oil level is below the bars?

battery
was not at full charge.things start to get goofy on these cars when a
battery
is not up to snuff. I just garbage canned the x brand that somebody else had installed in the car and went with an O.E.M unit and also purchased a
battery tender
as reccomended by some of the experienced members on this site.I do not know if this is pertinent in your instance but just something to look at as a maybe?
An oil check is always accompanied by an estimated time to when the reading will be given, as mentioned in the previous posts on this thread. If you haven't started the car in more than a couple of hours, it should give you a time of less than 10 seconds. If the motor has been run recently, then the time will be longer. If you ask for a measurement right after you shut it off, it could say up to 30 minutes. If there's no accompanying time shown, then you may have a problem with the sending unit. If that's the case you should be able to get it fixed under warranty unless your car has more than 50k miles on it. If there's not enough oil in it so show on the gauge, you will get a "low oil" warning from the computer a long time before that happens.

I tried something else, at the same time I turned the key on I clicked the computer lever to "oil Check" and there it was all the bars showing white. I guess I found it.
The irony.
Mine typically requires 5 minutes to the check the oil. Now maybe I'm crazy, but I'm pretty damn sure I could open a hood/trunk/access cover and pull the dipstick in less than half the time. Let's just say electronic oil measuring has got to be the most useless, unneeded automobile development since the automatic seatbelt extender. (Like I can't grab my own seatbelt)
