Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello gents, following my last post i have observed the following... when i first start the car from cold, i can turn the steering to full lock (whilst maneuvering out of the garage and onto the road etc) without hearing any noise at all, even on full lock. After ive gone for a long drive and the car has been warm for a good hour i notice this squeaking (wiping yr finger across a wet window) noise during slow turns, it may be there at higher speeds but if it is you wouldnt be able to hear it because of road noise etc. Anyway i noticed it again then while i was turning the wheel it just stopped completely so maybe its ok or could it be that what was making the noise, has just worn out completely? I checked the steering fluid resevoir and it was full up even when the engine was stone cold! i read the manual and it said that it should read below the 'cold' mark but i couldnt even tread where it says 'cold' as there was so much fluid on the dip stick! Guys is yr steering silent or is it ok to have this faint squeak? and if it had gone now what was it? any feedback is appreciated peter

Hi, I'm almost certain it's your front top mounts. They are notorious for this and mine does exactly the same - and my Boxster did before that. It's a loud squeak, exactly as you describe, when you turn the steering wheel - but only once the car has warmed up. It's about £500 to have the pair done, you can spray lube into them when the car has it's wheels on and is jacked up - you can just about get a long nozzle into it. This will generally put off the problem for 12 months. I was told that you can just put up with the noise, but it's starting to annoy me now, so I'll probably get it sorted at the next service.
