I recently looked to change my 996 cab, X51 cars are great but unless your going to track it they aren't really worth finding/paying a premium for imo as nice as they are.

Unfortunately gone are the days of being a single bloke trekking round the country looking at cars so I cant really take the time to test drive both to compare!

I am not in any particular rush and quite frankly I might use the cash to pick up some cheap shares if the stock markets keep doing what they are doing!
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Folks,
looking to buy my first 911 (previously owned a TVR Cerbera)
Just had an inspection done on an £18k C4S and it needs about £3k of work done to it and so I am thinking of buying a more expensive/desirable car.
I have seen a C4S with the X51 pack for low twenties and also have my eye on a £30k Turbo.
the turbo prices seemed to have softened recently so wondered whether it was best to go for the more expensive turbo or the X pack C4S.
Any wisdom much appreciated!
I recently looked to change my 996 cab, X51 cars are great but unless your going to track it they aren't really worth finding/paying a premium for imo as nice as they are. Again C4S cars are lovely but you will still have the potential issues of IMS/Bore score etc etc which I'm sure your aware of and after research can make your own mind up. I decided on a Turbo in the end, but be aware that the potential for expenditure is even greater with these models if you don't pick the right car. Either way you won't be disappointed
If the sound of a car is important to you then best bare in mind a stock turbo sounds rubbish compared to a C4S, and the C4S is really a nice looking car.
That said, I prefer the turbo, drive both and make sure you get a good PPI. Good luck
For me it would be the x51, especially on a C4S this is a very desirable and rare spec. The turbo whilst quick is perhaps not as special. You could even get a preemptive hartech rebuild and get up to the same total cost as the turbo.
And with most modern cars going turbo now, it'll be nice to have a nice n/a, and short of the gt3, this is as good as the 996 gets. Plus the noise :thumb:
A difficulty decision tho, there probably isn't a wrong answer.
Thanks for all the replies!

The point about all modern cars going turbo is a good one and noise is a consideration but not as much as used to be (needs to be family friendly)
It's been a while since I sold the TVR and there has been a massive increase in cyclists clogging up the nice roads here in surrey (I am one of them!) so speed is not really that important.
One of my concerns is resale value, there seems to be a huge range in price of what look like the same spec cars
I may look to make a lower offer on the one I had inspected and get all the work done that way I know it is sorted.
These are the two I am looking at..

You are in 997.2 territory at £high twenties£.
But, of the two you are focussing on, I would steer towards the Mezger engined Turbo and treat yourself to a quality sports exhaust. :thumb:
Get a manual turbo, it's a much better car than a C4S. Just don't go for the one in the link as it has rusty arches, which could be an indicator of rusty sills, which would be very expensive to put right.
This car was up for sale when I was looking, he had the rusty arch pictures in his ad at the time and they didn't look pretty. That said if your handy with filler & paint it might be the car for you 8)

if i'm not wrong this might still be for sale:

This is one of the best Turbo's in the country; it is simply stunning and been
really
well looked after.

Thanks for the further thoughts chaps.
I have seen the history and work carried out for that turbo and it is very good. The seller said he has got a number of quotes for the body work which come to about £900. I appreciate he has probably not investigate the sills but how would you do that unless you peeled back the underseal and pulled the bung out?
I'm sure the green turbo is a nice car but it has to be a manual.
