BTW - the car is already cleaned..had it washed on Wed and have not driven it much but gave it a once over with detail spray so she is spotless!

I'm no expert (just check my join date), but I have been following the eBay and New England region prices for "no-stories" 1999 Carrera 2's.

How much do you think this car is worth without replacing the engine?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a '99 C2 that has seen better years. In February I was in an accident that required fairly significant body work (but no frame damage). Almost every body panel needed replacing and the whole thing was repainted (total repairs about $12k).
Now, just last week I blew the engine and will need to have it completely replaced. Estimated repair costs are about $13.5k.
It's time for me and this car to part ways, but I'm trying to figure out which way is the most economical. How much do you think this car is worth without replacing the engine? With a replacement? I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth putting another $14k into this car or if I should just do a trade-in as-is for a new car.
It's a '99 C2 tiptronic with about 32,000 miles. Except for the engine, everything else is good on the car.
I'm no expert (just check my join date), but I have been following the eBay and New England region prices for "no-stories" 1999 Carrera 2's. They're listed at all kinds of prices between 30K and 45K, but the only
sales
I see are in the 25-30K range (I just bought one right in the middle of that range). I can't imagine a car with extensive bodywork is worth any more than 25K, even with a new engine. Subtract for the engine, subtract for the inconvenience, and I'd guess 10-12K is about right.
Now, if you found the right buyer -that is, a guy with a wrecked car wrapped around a great engine- you could maybe get more.
Looking for opinions, here. Am I off base?
Thanks for the answers guys (except LVDell who seems to like to post just to see his own writing without adding any value whatsoever).
That's about what I thought. I think if I could get $11k+ on an as-is trade-in I would be doing well. I figure even if I add an engine I would be doing well to get $25k which would be about the same as not doing anything.
I'm on the opposite coast 99firehawk.
oh the irony in your comment corey......sounds like the pot calling the kettle black. My comment was nothing more than an obvious observation. Nobody knows you yet you come to this forum an instead of using your first post to say hello, introduce yourself, say you've been around but never registered, etc, etc, etc, you instead come aboard with the all too exhausting "I'm done with my Porsche" first post thread that is usually based on a blown engine or the such.
What value exactly have you added to this forum? There are MANY guys here to help (as am I) but it just gets very tiresome knowing EXACTLY where this thread is heading like all those that came before it. You'll grab what you need, do your venting, and then be gone. Yeah, that's added value to this group.
Best of luck with your situation.
Corey:
As you (and others) have indicated, I'd guess the value of your car to be in the 10-12K range as-is. As you said, you probably don't have much to gain by putting in a new engine. I'd run a quick e-bay listing and see if someone might be interested in your car as a project. Perhaps someone with mechanical skills might pay more than 12K for a 996 project. It couln't hurt to do an e-bay listing and see what happens. If you don't get an acceptable offer, trade it in.

Corey. Piece of advice. When you're new to a place it is polite to introduce yourself.
Dell is one of our most helpful and knowledgeable members. Annoying those with "Rennlist member" under their name is not smart if you need help, as they're the people who "live" around here way more than they should.
Now, as you see from this thread, there are lots of helpful people around here, but it's not good to annoy the members. There's a certain ettiquette in joining any new club, this place is no different.
Just an FYI.
That being said, welcome to Rennlist. Photographs are customary, please post.
Oreganet - Well written post. Dell has helped so many posters that I'm certain that he has a small army of supporters. What impresses me most about this forum is the willingness of so many knowledgeable posters to offer their help to almost everyone who asks.
Always!
I spent 5 hours preparing my car for winter hibernation today... and I still haven't waxed it. I need a rest - this is as good a place as any to do mindless things.
Oops, post number 2: Hi, I'm new to the forum. I bought a 2003 C4S new with paint to match in Diamond Blue. It is a tiptronic and I have really enjoyed getting to know the transmission over the last 4 years. My wife has a 2003 BoxsterS M6 in Seal Grey.
I know it is off topic, but it looks to me that the dimensions of my 4S are the same as the 997. Has anyone done any measurements?

Dell is the one of the last guys you wanna ****-off. I'll second that he's one of the most knowledable and helpfull people here. I speak from experience.
At this point, I would recommend cancelling your account, creating a new one, and starting over.
Next time you walk into someone elses house, show a little respect!
I doubt he'll be back... but you're right, if he comes back he'll need a difference name.
Gant! Not seen you in a while! Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.
- I take my above comment back - his profile says that he checked in at 1:09pm today.
Oreganet, thanksgiving was great, hope yours was great, as-well.
Broke down and bought a daily driver, 1998 Jeep Cherokee with only 43k miles. God the weather is great here. Its like 80 degrees, WTF?
As we're pretty much done insulting Corey and this has turned into a 'random' thread...
Well, I finished detailing the car for the Winter... here are a couple of photos... my kind of shiny!!
I decided not to claybar the car - I'll delay that until the Spring, but the wax with the new buffer worked well.
Ours was good - as you said, awesome weather - it made it hard to prepare the car for hibernation... but after around a day of work we're all done and the car is ready to be covered.
... that being said, I could do with a couple more days off of work. It might take us that long to finish putting up the christmas lights and tree.
Great thread....I love how things turn left and then right again. You guys are comedy!
and since we are discussing weather..it is a very chilly 65 degrees here in LA. I may need to bring a sweater when I go out in my shorts and flip flops.
BTW - the car is already cleaned..had it washed on Wed and have not driven it much but gave it a once over with detail spray so she is spotless!
I guess I was out of the room for that. I'm sure I would have remembered.
I was mostly trying to track the Patriots beating Chicago... in true Patriots style they almost blew it in the last minute, then recovered themselves.
WHAT???? NO CLAYBAR?????.... and you call yourself a Porsche owner!!!!!!
Seriously, nice pics. The car looks good! I am liking Carrara White more and more each time I see it.
Thanks! I figure I'll do the claybar next year - I have all the stuff... I spent 5 hours on the car yesterday and didn't want to do the same again today... I did run my finger over the car and couldn't find any evidence of surface roughness, so I guess I'm in good shape and the car wasn't begging for it.
It was sad to cover up the exhausts and pull the car cover over it this evening... it's now officially hibernating. I'll wake it up in a few weeks to do the aero kit install, but otherwise it will be off the road until mid-March... I'm already counting the days.
As for the color - yeah, the white is amazing. If I'd known how great it could look I would have bought a white car years ago. Mine is actually Glacier White (3AU color code) - it has a slight blue tint to it (which you can see in the second picture that will become my avatar at some point). If I remember correctly, the Carrera white has a more reddish tint to it... I prefer the blue tint.
Here's another photo that I took yesterday evening - after the wash, but before the waxing - looks great even then.
Hey Oreganet...since this thread is completely off topic now...I noticed you have the headlight covers on your 996. Do you like them? What kind did you get? Fit and finish? I am kinda torn and undecided if I like them or not...I have seen the really expensive ones..and seen the ebay cheapers...I dunno.
Just wanted your opinion on them.
I am not afraid of Dell....since he moved to NC (or was it SC) anyways far away from me..when he lived in Vegas I was only about 300mls away..so I was more careful.....even with his GT-3 he won't make it intime for me to run!!
AND anyone who is so neglicent about his P-car and dents every bodypanel...should have his P taken away by the P-car police!!! It is abuse!!!
I love them. I didn't do the installation though - that was done by the previous owner. The fit and finish is good - not difficult to match white paint. I was told that they were Gemballa parts, but I've only ever seen them on Automotion.com and Gemballa's website... not even sure if Gemballa still sells them, as I didn't see them when I was there last.
It's a nice way to give the car some unique character.
I agree. I'm not that knowledgeable about my Porsche, but I'm learning alot through the posting and the replies. I thank you, my Porsche thanks you and most importantly my wallet thanks you...

Hi Guys,
My name is Corey. I am new here, and wanted to introduce myself to the forum. I used to own a porsche but the stupid thing blew up and no one would help me fix it so I sold it on eBay and now I have a new Corvette. I was going to buy the regular coupe, but I have a very tiny ***** so I wanted to buy the Z06.
I don't actually know how to drive, so I need an automatic transmission but the Z06 doesn't come with an automatic so I had to buy the regular car.
I would have bought the convertible, but the wind ruins my comb-over and besides I don't have any money since I got rid of that supid porsche.
Here are my questions: 1) which is better, the Borla exhaust or the B&B exhaust? 2) which is better, the K&N intake system or the Lingfelter intake? 3) which is the best Corvette club to join? In my area there is the midlife crisis blue collar crew (MCBCC), the gold chain white shoe crew (GCWSC) and the poseur racer wannabe club (PCWC) and the monthly show annual drive group (MSADG) and the trophy wife toy club (TWTC) but I don't think I can join that one since technically I am not a woman.
Thanks. I hope you guys are friendlier than those meanies on the porsche forum. They made me cry, they are so mean.
I quit. That'll show them!
