have a 2014 Boxster, and after a recent PCM update by the dealer, I am having problems with the Navigation system. When the nav voice speaks, I turn the volume knob to increase the volume of her voice. But...there are two problems: (1) The nav system does not retain that volume. Each time she speaks, volume is back to the original quiet volume and I must turn the knob to raise the volume. (2) If I was also listening to the radio, after the nav voice stops speaking, the radio volume goes up to an ear-splitting level. Raising the volume of the nav voice also raises the volume of the radio.
The dealer said "That's how it works, all our other Boxsters do the same." But, the nav didn't act like this before, and the nav is now almost unusable.
Any ideas? How can I resolve this?
I have a 14
Cayman S
, and I seem to remember there being a separate volume control within the programming of the Navi itself. I haven't touched anything since purchase 3 years ago, but I seem to remember it being an option somewhere, so worth digging around to see. Its possible the update simply reset the Navi volume back down from whatever it was set to before the update
Hi ICNU. There is a way to set the default start volume, from zero to 11. But that doesn't change the volume while the nav is talking, only the initial default start volume. That works, but if you need more volume, turning up the volume knob while she's speaking, it doesn't remember that setting, and it affects the volume of the radio as well.
Very strange. Common sense would dictate that the start volume would stay the same as the turn by turn directions and be completely separate from the radio volume. I wonder if this is a recent update that others will get on their units, or it they are just now getting to updating your system from an old update released long ago?
I say this because I was told of an update and had it done over a year or two ago. It might be helpful to know which PCM software version you are running so it can be compared to the behavior of others. I dont recall off the top of my head what version Im running, but could take a look today.
Yup, very strange. This issue only started since the dealer updated the PCM earlier this year. I've told them I don't want it back until they talk to Porsche to figure this out. The Nav is useless the way it works now. The weird thing is that they say ALL the
Boxster
on their lot work the same way, where the Nav speaking volume is not retained after raising it with the volume knob. We'll see. I wish I could contact Porsche myself, but can't figure out how to do that...
The favorite line of the service department . . . .
I’ve had the same issue with my ’14 BS. I expecially noticed it this summer on a 5-Week Road Trip. I worked my way through the PCM menu th change the starting volume, but it took several adjustments to make it acceptable. I think I had received an update at the dealer in April, when I was there for a 4-wheel alignment. My biggest disappointment with the NAV partion of the PCM is how many keystrokes, button pushes, knob twists, etc. it takes to get a reasonable result. I usually us it for simple routes and use one of my Garmin Nuvi’s for complicated routes. Sometimes my wife will help me by changing the destination in the Porsche PCM so I get an orange line that’s easier to see on the MFD; this helps especially on unfamiliar twisty roads to get an idea about the upcoming turn direction. I still prefer using the NuviCam as the primary GPS on multi-leg routes, with the Porsche Nav as secondary with it’s volume muted.
Although I have yet to try this:
