My CD player (CDR24 with Bose) stopped working earlier this week (radio still working). I brought that to the dealer and they swapped it for a new unit. However, they couldn't get it to work because they don't have the updated software to activate the stereo. They told me that they are waiting for the new software from Germany which won't arrive until early next week. I know this week is a German holiday but the whole thing just sounds very suspicious to me. I wonder if any other people have similar issue.
Furthermore, I now get an message telling me my car needs service in the next 30 days. My car is less than one year old with only 5200 miles so there is no reason for servicing. They must have done something wrong in programming the damn thing.
I hear you and feel for you. I have no good advice for this situation, but wanted to say.....whatever happened to the good ole days when cars were fixed with just a few tools....no programming necessary!
Ahhhhhhhh
It's my belief that they're lying...
I just read the chapter on replacing cdr-24 in the Cayman workshop manual and nowhere in the instructions does it say a cd is needed to activate. In fact what I believe the cause may be; is that to replace the unit, the tech must first do a code read with the PIWIS and download the current configuration of the car; then replace the unit and use the PIWIS "write-in codes" command to complete the new CDR configuration, and then he must go into the "Required and actual components installed list" and make sure the configuration matches all the hardware actually in your car. If they forget to do the read process, they have to manually code the radio to work with your car, and the only way to get the code is by them requesting the codes from Porsche, as they are VIN specific. My guess is that they are actually waiting on Porsche to provide these codes to make your new device work.

Slightly off topic
That workshop manual sounds like it could be a rather helpful piece of literature. Where did you purchase your copy?
TIA
Drama continues on my radio replacement. Here is the story according to my dealer. Porsche, instead of sending them a new radio, has sent them a previously coded radio. Because it is previously coded, the radio keeps locking up whenever they try to activate it ("Protected" appears in the LCD screen). Apparently, they have done it twice in a roll so my car has been in the shop for three days. They are going to get a never been coded CDR24 from another local dealer and have that installed tomorrow.
Is it true that a previously coded radio will not work properly in another car? In the mean time, I have to enjoy another day of Enterprise car rental. The dealer has been apologetic but they blame Porsche for sending them defective parts (twice in a roll!)
There is probably a procedure for matching a previously coded radio to a new cluster, but the workshop manuals are all written assuming a new radio as that's what Porsche has usually sent out in the past (at least with replacement CDR-23s in 986s.)
Well; my dealer was able to make the PCM unit I bought from ebay that was previously coded on a sound package plus carrera on my Bose cayman; so I'm guessing it can be done with the CDR24 too; but I'm not sure...
eric_l, the user Porschelibrarian has them available as pdf's for sale.

After all that cr@p, I would buy one off of ebay for $100 and try it myself. It may not work, but at least you'll have a better perspective. I have had 2 different PCMs and a CDR24 in my car and never had that problem. Not all of the features may work, but it isn't locked out ....
I believe you mean to say twice in a row. (meaning one right after the other)
The computer age has been both a boon and a real headache, and royal PITA when they malfunction. Glitches, bugs, hangups, shutdowns, are a daily thing for people working and using computers and like devices. I would bet a great deal of time is spent by repair personal doing this. The old days of timing the spark, synching carburetors, changing points and plugs are long gone. Then again we have cars that put out more HP, are more efficient and clean burning than ever. I remember when in the age of increasing smog regs (late 70s early 80s) , my friends and I were predicting the end of powerful hi performance cars. How wrong we were.
Sorry to be off topic a bit.
