Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

The best way to check for failing IMS bearing is to take oil samples and send them off for testing and cut the oil filter element open & spread it out looking for metal particles.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Will a degrading IMS always (or almost always) show a deviation in cam timing? From Pelican Tech article: "You can compare the deviations in the timing between the two camshafts to see if they vary widely, particularly when revving the engine (see Figure 18). Sometimes a failing IMS bearing will also trigger a “check engine light” warning on your dash, as the car's computer realizes that there is a significant deviation between the two camshaft readings." Thanks Ed

Not always. Many times, the IMS fails catastrophically and totally without any warning.

POST 3Original post

The best way to check for failing IMS bearing is to take oil samples and send them off for testing and cut the oil filter element open & spread it out looking for metal particles. You should also remove the oil sump plate after draining the oil & look for metal filings in the remaining oil on the plate. You must also look for bits of plastic in the filter media & in the sump plate. This indicates chain rail wear & will cause cam deviation issues. Last but not least, when the sump plate is removed look up inside the pickup tube at the screen for debris. Most important is quit using Mobil one in these cars. Motul 8100Xcess or Jake Gibbs oil only & 5000 mile max intervals. Howard
