I have owned numerous cars with Navigation/Phone systems in them. MY new Cayman has the PCM 2.1 with phone and trip modules. When on road test prior to purchasing, the radio had to be ON in order to get voice commands out of the Nav. I told salesman to turn the radio off. With radio off, there is no Nav instructions. I said, "look, I dont want to listen to the friggin radio......i just want to here the Nav give teh turn by turn instructions..how do i turn off the radio and still get sound from teh Navigation"?. He did not have answer. Five other salesman did not have answer. Service Dept did not have answer. They said this is the first time anyone has ever asked such a question. I was incredulous! Really? THe FIRST time ever? Ihave enver heard of a care that required that both the radio and Navigation be on at the same time in order to hear the Nav instructions!! WHats does this mean? If I am listening to some LA radio station and drving across teh country, i have to keep KIIS FM turned on and listen to the crackle of poor recpetion just so i can hear my Nav?? I cant beleive this!!
I dont want to listen to the radio when i drive. I want to listen to the engine and all the nuances of the driving expereince. I may need help in getting where I want to go (hence the Nav), but I dont wish any other disturbances to abberantly inpinge upon my otherwise serene acoustical landscape..lol.
So, how can i shut everything else DOWN, and still have audible navigation and phone? HELP!
I believe I have your solution, hit navi on the PCM, hit set. Scroll to NAVI FIX,
turn this setting ON.
Then, scroll to audio and select the volume level you want the navigation instructions to be played at. Then turn your radio volume down all the way so you can hear no audio. Your navigation volume will now be independent of the volume knob of the PCM.
Your dealership salesman and service department need to read the PCM manual, you might wanna take a glance at it too
Were the other cars Porsches? Electronics seem to be an afterthought, a luxury put into the car but not part of the driving experience. I have noticed the same thing but dont really care but I can believe no one has ever asked the question before. Suneet has a good workaround.
Previous cars with Nav were Aston-Martin DB-7, Audi A8, (2) Jaguar XKR's, Jaguar XJR, Mercedes E55, and Lexus (obviously my wife's car) lol.
What I have been doing is just muting the radio. It is a work-around, but not a solution..anxious to try the above suggestion.thanks!
Read manual?? I can't!! I still have to figure out my Creston remote control, how to work my iPhone, how to work AT&T Tilt phone...Instruction manuals for 3D StudioMax, Maya, Cinema 4D......life is getting too complex! Whatever happened to "intuitive design"? This raises a philosophical question....."Should one have to have a manual to work a car?" Working a car shoudl be about as easy as working a pencil. (at least for me, cuz if it gets more complex then that, i am SOL!) lol
Well, while clearly nice cars, I would view them more in the "luxury" category. There was a large thread here recently about is the Cayman a luxury car? IMO, Porsche doesn't seem to care too much or is behind the curve in electronics. Many complain about the lack of an aux-in for an Ipod connector. Now that the PCM 3.0 has been announced for the Cayenne with touch screen, well that's about 4 years behind aftermarket.
If you don't read your manual, you may find little sympathy here. It's all there, you just need to go do some research. However, I totally agree with you about not being intuitive. I think the Nav manual is terrible and the GPS is totally non-intuititive. My 4 year old Magellan is far more intuitive and simple to use than PCM. I've learned my lesson
Takes the $100 bill out of Chows4us mailbox and sends it over to Suneet..
