Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I seem to be finding the undercarpet wet. Noticed this when I was cleaning the car during the weekend and lifted the mat (no fluid/water on top of the mat).
- This seems to only occur on the drivers side and confirm the fluid has no smell or colour hence likely to be rain water.
- Doing a bit more investigation, also noticed that the left foot rest (its a tip, where the clutch would usually be i guess) i could see signs that water was following this path.
- On lifting the bonnet, all seems to be in place incl the battery cover. But lifting the battery cover and placing my hand down the right side of the battery side (facing the rear of car) I could feel a build up of water in which i dried out with tissue/towel.
This seems to be occurring again and I can't workout how water is getting there. Im guess is not helped by the downpour in rain but surely with the bonnet closed the water to drizzle correctly to the side?
- I look under the bonnet of another 996 and i dont seem to be missing any seals here, looks the same really.
Can you *please* help out or some pointers here please before I take it to OPC/indy to have a look into?
Thanks!!
almost certainly definitely possibly the drain holes are blocked C.Afsar.
Someone more knowledgable can tell you exactly where they are but from memory of a thread on the odl site they're at the sides of the boot seal (each side)
Thanks Tim for the update. Triedto find these "drain holes" but not really sure what im looking for?
Does anyone else maybe have some input in what/where i should look for?
Thanks!
Drains
I don't have my 996 here now , so can't check but ...
from the Bentley Boxster manual ( should apply to pre facelift 996 ?) ,
there should be 3 main water drains , in the front cowl area.
One on the left side , one in the middle and one on the right side.
From the picture of that manual , I would say you have to open the covers both sides of battery. The plastic covers that come off relatively easily.
You should be able to see the leaves & debris , if there is something down there.
The manual says :
- use vacuum cleaner to remove debris
- carefully blow out water drain using compressed air
And there is a warning : TO AVOID WATER DAMAGE, MAKE SURE WATER DRAINS ARE NOT PUSHED OUT OF POSITION !!!!
I haven't done this myself , so don't know anything else. And haven't (yet) located my own drains so can't be more specific of their locations.
But normally , they are visible , or should be relatively easy to find.
Re: Drains
Thank eki912. Ive had a look and indeed there is a "drain type thing" on the left side (after the battery cover is removed). I could also see two others underneath the right/left side vent (if thats what its called.)
Im aiming to get the "hexegon type screw" tool kit next week so will unscrew this and give this a could clean too.
-Will also try to remember to take picts in case others have the same issue!
Thanks again.
Sorry for the delay... picts below where to find the water drains. There are 4 in total two on each side of the batttery..
A job lot easier once you taken the covers off.
Closeup....
On a side note - anyone know what the "pipe thingy" is for that comes off the battery? (red nozzle with the transparent hose connected on the side in the pict). I presume its to fill up the fluid?
Never seen it before on other cars, where does this go and where does the fluid topped from?
Cheers.
It could be the door membranes
do you find this after heavy rain?
run your hand allong the the bottom of the carpet on the door panel
if there wet the door membrane needs replacing
Mods - Would this be useful to add to the 996 FAQ section?
Also to add - In my case, issue was relating to the Membrane (the one over the heater matrix).
