The great thing is that if the mood arises, I can mod the car again faster than it takes to check and adjust the tire pressures!

Actually I should also check with my father to see if he could fabricate something for me since he does aircraft welding.

If the aftermarket exhausts don't save weight, this would be great way just to change the sound.

I concur, such a test pipe is already in test fabrication by the person who passed this tip on to me, perhaps they will share it with all of us once they have it ready.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Always in the mood to experiment with 'free' mods I decided to spend a little time this weekend trying out the free 'motor sound' modification. As with any mod feel free to try this yourself and if you like it great, if you don't then change it back, it is a very simple modification but has a VERY noticeable affect on the aural sensation of the
Cayman
.
Step 1, using a 15mm deep socket remove your existing
exhaust
tip (This step is optional but makes the
next
step easier.
Step 2, loosen the 2 - 13mm nuts on the cross-over pipe sleeve and slide the sleeve to one side.
Step 3, tighten the 2 -13mm nuts to a snug fitting just to hold the sleeve in place.
Start the car and enjoy! Here's a picture to help everyone out in trying to figure out these steps.
In the image above the sleeve has been slid over to theleft to reveal about a 1/2' gap between the top two silencer cross over pipes that are part of the upper 1/2 of our mufflers. Is some exhaust gas escaping here? Sure, but it is post two cats and post muffler and only about 6 inches from where the regular exhaust tip is so I don't see much harm in it, but if you think it will be a problem, don't try this mod.
Total time is 5-10 minutes, at least worth a 'test' to see what your Cayman CAN sound like!
Enjoy!
Porsche
says '
Muffler Connecting Pipe
- Mixing of the exhaust gases between the right and left mufflers takes place by way of a connecting pipe (as the cross-coupling point). This cross-coupling point helps to produce the
ideal sound
'. So your ideal sound is just a different one from Porsches. I don't think there is an increase in emissions with what you did.
There wouldn't be an increase in emissions because this is all downstream from the cats, all of the emissions stuff has already happened to the
exhaust
stream, this is just giving it an earlier exit point...
So have you given it a try yet? Very easy to do, takes just a few minutes, I'm curious what others think of the sound...
Just did it. Reminds me of being 15 again. The sound is a lot more robust and not unpleasant. It will be good to compare with the aftermarket offerings.
RR - do it before you take a drive or otherwise burn your touchey bits...mine was still a little warm so it was good to have the mechanic's gloves in the shop.
No need for one since the time to do the mod is so short. Much deeper growl, unless I had some professional recording gear no camera microphone is going to do the actual sound justice. Just go try it, you'll probably be done faster than the time it would take to download a sound clip anyway... /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/tounge_smile.gif
Perhaps a better more permanent solution would be to add a T pipe into the top pipessimilare to the one currently on the bottom pipes. The T could merge with the bottom pipe prior to entering the
exhaust
tip. This way at least all
exhaust
gases are exiting through the
exhaust
tip and the sound sould be identical.
AttilaS,
I concur, such a test pipe is already in test fabrication by the person who passed this tip on to me, perhaps they will share it with all of us once they have it ready. Actually I should also check with my father to see if he could fabricate something for me since he does aircraft welding. The cross pipe would have to be cut so that the attachment
points
would be similar to the lower pipe with the existing tip because you would be trying to merge both pipes together at once if connected to a common outlet. What would even be WAY cool would be to put in an electric or vacuum powered butterfly valve and wire that to a switch on the dash such as the sport switch and have the bypass engage whenever is sport mode. /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif
Back in the 60's we used to put pre-muffler cut outs on our
exhaust
systems that could be open with a cable from the drivers seat as soon as we were away from our parent's ears.
Well, I just came back from a drive with this mod. Here are my impressions:
- Was incredibly easy to do. It literally took longer to select the right socket extensions than it did to do the mod. I did not remove the tip. Instead I loosened the two clamps by the tee which holds the tip and rotated it downward. This allowed access to the connector tube above it. Total mod time was about 5 minutes or less.
- For a free mod it yields amazing results. If the aftermarket exhausts don't save weight, this would be great way just to change the sound.
- Coming off throttle in the midrange, you can hearthe

-Between 2000rpm and 4000 rpm it does boom in the cockpit when the engine is loaded. A 30 minute drive gave me a headache. Some people may like it but I didn't.
Overall, very interesting mod. I liked the overall volume and presence of the soundbut the booming didn't agree with me. Anelectric servo valve would be great so you can turn it on and off at will. Until Ior someone makes something like this, I'll be switching back once thecar cools down. The great thing is that if the mood arises, I can mod the car again faster than it takes to check and adjust the tire pressures!
Great find K-man.
ok...im done with the clips. i made a short movie out of them, but to keep the sound accurate it has to be a fairly large file. Maybe to big for putfile...K-Man S...let me know if you want to put it on the site and let me know how to upload it. Its about 12MB, 20MB if you want the best sound quality.
I will try to post a smaller version on putfile, and put a link in this thread, but it may be hard to tell the difference in sound due to the quality of the video in a smaller format.
btw...it really does sound great! deeper and throatier at idle for sure. i havent had a chance to take her out yet, but i cant wait!
If you email me a link to the full size video I will download them and put them up on this server to host them. They will be too large for you to upload through the client end. Email LINK to
[email removed]
ok...here is the link...
http://www.putfile.com/redrockett
click on the file and you should be able to watch it. K-Man-S...i dont think you will be able to download it from putfile...i may have to find another site where i can put it, or maybe try to email it to you directly..
anyway...enjoy everyone.
As I suspected the video/sound clip doesn't really catch the new lower bass tones to the
exhaust
, but thanks for uploading, hopefully that will give some people an idea before they do the mod, but again, it might be faster to do the mod than to download the video...
Well done RR. My
exhaust
sounds different than either one of those. I've got a
Porsche
twin tube chromed tip from their parts book, it must act as a bell on a horn to some extent, changing the tone of the
exhaust
. I would describe the sound as burbly flatulence (idle) to shrieking wail (7000 rpm). This car is amazing.
Ok, I will admit to being the least mechanically inclined person on this site, but I could not remove the ehaust tip. I loosened the (single) bolt, but the tip would not budge. I even tried to get it off by tapping with a rubber mallet, but no joy.
Any hints as to how I can get the tips off?
Free exhaust mod
Just completed exhaust mod, cut pipe, in U shape, went for test drive, perfect. Took one hour without lift. Amazing results. Had tried just seperating pipe before, vibration annoying. no vibration now
