The same water bottle serves the windscreen and lamp washers (so make sure it is filled).

Once the car has left the factory an aftermarket kit can be installed without the need/requirement for a wash system BUT it must comply with all MOT legislation, beam pattern etc.

If I did have headlamp cleaning does it come on when you wash the windscreen?

Out of interest though, why is it the law to have to have headlamp cleaning with Xenons?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sometime last week I noticed that the driver's side light was out on my C4S, so I attempted to change it today. Not a big job I know, but without an owners manual (still waiting for OPC to forward on to me) it was a bit baffling.
Thankfully though, there were some excellent posts on here to get me started. I was quite impressed with the mechanism that releases the headlamp. At first I thought I may have to take the front wheel off to access the lamp from under the wheel arch, like on my Z4, but a quick search saved me a lot of time.
However, when the bulb was out of the holder I did a quick test to see if it had blown, but it had not. I then thought it was possibly the fuse, but the passenger side one was still working. Another quick search highlighted that the terminals on the connector get crapped up. A quick wipe with a cotton bud and I was back in action. The best bit was that it didn't cost me anything - not even a bulb.
One quick question though, how can I tell if I have headlamp washing? I have the xenon (Litronic?) lights, and there is a chrome plastic disc in the centre of the light. Do these headlamps come with headlamp cleaning as standard? Once I had removed the headlamp I also noticed that there was a tube at the back, which looked like it delivered fluid into the headlamp. If I did have headlamp cleaning does it come on when you wash the windscreen? I have not noticed anything when I have done this in the past.
Thanks again for a great site
Lee
By law if you have xenons then you will have the headlightwash system. When the lights are on, push the wiper stalk away from you and you should know if they are working or not.
It isn't quite the law....
If a manufacturer wants to add HiD to a car then they are obliged to install headlamp wash at the same time. Once the car has left the factory an aftermarket kit can be installed without the need/requirement for a wash system BUT it must comply with all MOT legislation, beam pattern etc.
If you want proof of what I have written consult your nearest VOSA or MOT station who will verify this.
Are they any real use then? I can't imagine they get rid of much?
It made me think back to when my dad had Volvo's and they had wipers on the headlamps too!
Lee,
glad to see you're making use of the Forum here. As you have mentioned, it is a great site. And it usually points you in the right direction when things aren't quite what they first seem to be. Thanks to the contributions of its members.
So, there's at least two 996 C4S's in Derbyshire..... :thumb:
You have factory xenons, levellers and you have washers.
(so retrofit "legal" discussion is a bit of a red herring, but FYI retro fitted xenon or HID lights are legal as long as the beam is correctly declinated [pointed down] by 1% if projector lens or if the original halogen parabolic refelector is used that the HID arc is still on axis and without beam artifacts and is declinated 1.3%. Retrofits do not require either washers or auto leveling to pass an MOT.)
Re: your lights, the discs hide the pop up washer jets, and as you have discovered you have washer liquid pipes.
The same water bottle serves the windscreen and lamp washers (so make sure it is filled). The washers are operated by pushing the right hand stalk (wiper stalk) away from you.
Obviously, the jet action depends on a working/unblocked pump, pipes and jets (including the raising mechanism). Assuming all the above they should pop out and spray the lamp units.
Thanks guys, I will try them on the way to work tomorrow.
Yes Nick B, at least two C4S in Derbyshire. Do you live in the north in the Peaks? I am in the South.
My advice would be not to use them above about 60mph, as the covers have a nasty habit of flying off!
I sent you a PM about the owner's manual, but you don't seem to have picked it up.
Washers are fitted to xenon cars the intense light can be significantly deflected by dust/dirt on the lens. So to avoid dazzle to other road users OEM fitment is required to have washers (and similarly levellers are fitted to avoid dazzle aswell)
For clarity, the right stalk operation by pushing away (towards dash) is for the headlamp jets. Normal windscreen washers are the opposite (ie pull towards you)
