I have been researching for a while and have looked at various
exhaust
setups. I want a drone free, mild
exhaust
when cruising that has a louder snarl to it when under acceleration. From what I have seen and listened to the
Carnewal GT exhaust
is the best choice for this. The problem is I am a DIY guy and I also think shipping the
exhaust
would be a pain in the ***. With that said I think I have figured out how to do the ultimate factory
exhaust
mod for the
Cayman
.
First
you start with a DIY Carnewal GT exhaust mod.

Looks like this guy has pretty much figured out the Carnewal GT exhaust mod. Cut it open and remove the secondary cat guts and then replace that tiny second pipe inside the muffler with a little bigger pipe.
Second
you can also change the outlet from the muffler to tip. The factory outlet causes exhaust turbulance. By smoothing out the exhaust flow you create better flow and better sound. The Dream 1 tip eliminates this issue. You can either buy a Dream 1 or you can build your own. Pretty simple setup.

Third
is the factory Cayman S exhaust pipes leading from the headers to the mufflers are 48mm and the Cayman R pipes are 55mm. (1.88976" vs 2.16535")
"What's so special about CaymanR standard and CaymanR PSE exhausts ?
For the CaymanR, the tube between the manifold and the actual exhaust housing is enlarged from 48mm (like any other P87-2, incl Spyder) to 55mm. This results in a better performance and more sound." - Carnewal
So you just cut off the pipes going into the muffler and replace them with 2 1/4" piping.
I believe the combination of these 3 mods would create the ultimate factory exhaust mod for the Cayman. Should give maximum power and sound gains with minimal drone. Also basically looks stock. I would paint it with black exhaust paint while it is all out.
Anyone have some input on this? I am open for any suggestions
Go ahead, do it!
I am definitely going to! I just sold my E36
M3
daily driver and I am waiting on my
Cayenne
Turbo S to arrive. I am having to daily the
Cayman S
for now. So I can't really start on this project yet
One thing I noticed is that Maxspeed Motorsports sells a Y pipe muffler outlet similar to the Dream 1 (cheaper too btw if you are looking to buy) but they also sell an X pipe outlet. I am wondering which is the better design.
Got a response back from Maxspeed Motorsports regarding the Y vs X pipe :
Hello I will be honest with you , both Y and X perform very well, if you ask me in looks the final result the X version looks better due to the size of the tips… but performance wise the Y will perform just as good.
Thanks and let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Nello
Makes me wonder why they offer two different pipes...
Upon further prodding I got the answer I was looking for:
Yes sorry I forgot to mention that ..
The Y-pipe will sound a little louder, both exhaust pulses will join in one pipe at the very end , the X-Pipe splits both banks so it sounds cleaner if you’d like . the Y more high pitch the X deeper tone. However having the factory exhaust the flow will improve versus the factory T Pipe but sound will slightly improve but it’s not like changing the entire exhaust .
Thanks
There are plenty of X-pipes on eBay as well if you don't care to overspend for a very simple piece of pipe....just sayin'
I'm not sure which design I am going to with yet. I am just going to build mine.
OK then, I've had the Cayman R based Carnewal GT muffler on mine for a while now and would do it all over again tomorrow. Looks to be really well thought out. The work is perfect, too. So IMHO,
Cantrell Motorsports, , Carnewal GT Muffler Mods
. Just do it.
As for the rest, a nice set of headers would make the list. I wanna do that someday. And for a tip, I'll eventually slip in a stainless x-pipe of sorts. Something sorta high end from a brand with some cred, cause that's what's visible!
Not to thread jack here but give
Fabspeed
some consideration too. I drove to their facility today and had an
exhaust
installed. I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. The sound is amazing and their stuff looks like art. Good luck with whatever you decide.

DIY is the antithesis of purchased units. I have a purchased
exhaust
, and I still want to do this to my stock! Happy to see some real discussion of what is involved.
Glad to hear that you like the
exhaust
! I am hoping mine will come out very similarly.
As far as
headers
go I agree!
Ok I realize I haven't updated this in forever. I am currently speaking to a friend of mine who is a welder about helping me out with this project. We should be working on it fairly soon.
Ok so he has looked everything over and we're good to go. Just need a free weekend to do it.
ever do this? Im considering doing it myself.
