Have you checked your injectors, are they all shooting.
Leading evidence: 'Check injectors, are they all shooting' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fuel pressure' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Took it back and they said it was fuel contamination in the oild, flushed engine, changed oil, - same problem.

Suggestion
Im sure it may have already been looked into, but has the MAF been cleaned/replaced?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I posted a while ago about my rough running 996. General feeling was that it was a coil gone and reccomendation to get it on the computer.
Took car to an indi garage in Christchurch Dorset who reccomended all new coils (3 had been done by porsche opc 6 months before). I said just to do the one on cylinder 5 that was the rough running cylinder, this they did to no avail. They reccommended all new plugs - again to no avail. They then suggested a full leak down and compression test - revealed nothing! Then they suggested that the air mass sensor was the problem so they changed that (at huge expense). I picked the car up as they said it was all ready and guess what, still running rough with the same 'check engine light' showing on the dash. Took it back and they said it was fuel contamination in the oild, flushed engine, changed oil, - same problem. By now I am getting a bit annoyed, they have had it for 7 weeks! The latest is they think the valve lifters are sticking, quote is £600 to do that one cylinder without removing the engine. The question is I am really worried this wont solve the problem. The problem is also intermitent and getting more frequent, surely valve lifters would always be the same - sticking or not?
A friend of mine has said it could be a lam sensor in the exhaust, he said he had one go and that caused the same problems with his 996, I don't know what it it is but any ideas I would really appreciate it.......REALLY APPRECIATE IT.
Many Thanks
I can't offer exact advice other than give the guys at Hartech a call, or maybe Sports&classic. Maybe they can through some light on it... Good luck though :thumb:
Sounds like you need to find a new indie
Fuel in oil :?: no way. Sticky valve lifters :dont know: but Leak down showed nothing :?
If it's coils or plugs, simply unplug one at a time and see if the engine runs rougher or not.
If they replace the MAF and it didn't help then ask them to put the old perfectly good one back on.
I'm not surprised you getting annoyed. you pay them for the expertise.
Have you checked your injectors, are they all shooting. when it runs rough, is it down on power, is it the same through the full rev range, or is it an idle rough run? have they checked your fuel pressure? you may have a leak? Not sure lamda would cause one cylinder to run rough.
What are your fault codes?
I'm sure with some more info, the guys here can help you out 8)
I had the same problem with experts and VAG on my quattro, they spent lots of my money not fixing my car, they then said it needed a new engine, I eventually traced it down to a broken earth wire on the full throttle switch!!! I really understand your pain :x
Im sure it may have already been looked into, but has the MAF been cleaned/replaced?
The rough engine you mention of, is it during idle, drive, reverse, gear change, particular revs ect?
Is it more constants during different temperatures?
This may also help understand the issue a bit more.... albeit to someone is more technical with car mechanics then myself...
Whats the history of the vehicle? - services/belt changes/mileage ect?
You may be getting an airleak AFTER the airflow meter.
Any air that gets pulled in via the system won't be "seen" by your cars ECU and therefore not adjusted/corrected by the ECU. This a common cause of rough running on a 911 and will usually flash the ECL.
Look
VERY carefully
for things such as faulty hose clips for tightness and the condition of the hoses themselves for any/all cracks or splits, especially all the vacuum system small bore pipes and fitttings for any cracks etc. Were the replaced parts fitted correctly?
The best way to locate a leak is to have the engine running and warm.
Any good indy will have measured the resistance on the Lamba for the/a tell-tale failure reading(has yours?) If it's a faulty lamba it will also flash the ECL
Intermittent faults are usually(but not always) ignition and not mechnical related.
Q: How did the indy check your coil packs exactly or did they just assume the previously fitted ones were ok? Did the OPC paperwork identify/clearly state which coil packs were changed and on specifically what banks? Usually when they start to fail the remainders are never far behind and if your car has done over 50k the coil packs are prime suspects too. Sometimes mistakes are made when sorting out coil pack failures and when you think you may now have a working set of coil packs, one circuit is still faulty.
Ignition and/or air/vacum/lamba/faulty ECU methinks but clearly you can only get a certain degree of advice on a forum.
Maybe a 1.5 hour session with another Indy/OPC is a good shout.
Seriously dude, I'm with the second poster (996911c/t or whatever complex persona he has)
You 'indie' is ripping out a new ars3h0le for you by the sounds of it!
The sad reality is, any chimp can bolt parts onto a car, but it takes a little skill and knowledge to tell which ones!
These guys have guessed. Not good enough IMHO :?:
.....also, get the indy to read-out the ECU fault codes and post them on here/PM me. I have the factory OBDI/II material and can look into each fault code if that helps.
996 indie
Sounds like you need to find another indie, as the one you describe hear sounds like they are guessing. if the follower was sticking you would hear it tap.
Thanks guys - really helpfull.
The car has a full history mainly opc, has 88k on the clock. The rough running is intermitent and only at tickover, car still gives good power and is smooth as ever at revs.
They have thrown the old Air Mass sensor away so are unable to demonstate that to me. They say that they can hear the tapping of the lifters but I am amazed that could be intermitent.
I will call tomorow and relay some of your questions.
Thanks for your help, any more I am grateful of.
It could be someting simple, like the throttle body wants cleaning. This wouldn't cause a problem on no5 cylinder though but is a cheap job and probably wothwhile after 88k miles.
Big Bird,
why dont you use the OPC in Bournemouth? I'm sure they would have had it sorted & back to you in a couple of days. Seven weeks is taking the.........!!!!
