Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had my alternator replaced at local porsche dealer for £400, with the local indie quoting £380.
Leading evidence: 'Replace alternator' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'battery as the car still starts' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check systems' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Dont suspect the battery as the car still starts but alternator charge light on and voltage on dash less than 12v and falling as engine is run.

Fortunate no damage done and asked that they check all the systems to ensure they were operational - all clear fortunately.

My guess is Alternator is knackered...slight clicking noise when the alternator is running - like a small bit of gravel is in there - when listening with engine compartment open - belt ok and not slipping - car has done 55k.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Having got my C2 through the MOT on Thursday after an 11th hour fault in the light switch...fixed thanks to some great advice on here i got an alternator failure light on the way home on Friday night...sods law!
Alternator not charging and thanks to the battery holding out I got the car home 20 miles even though the lights started to get a little dim for the last few miles. Dont suspect the battery as the car still starts but alternator charge light on and voltage on dash less than 12v and falling as engine is run.

Does not look like a diy job....can it be replaced with the engine ensitu - and what kind of money is it going to cost. Thinking is to go to indy and see if I can get a recon unit fitted - assuming that it is of course the alternator and not wiring/ fuse etc...
Any thoughts/ experiences greatly appreciated
Hi there. I had my alternator replaced at local porsche dealer for £400, with the local indie quoting £380.
I looked up some pictures on youtube an it looked like a difficult job.
Good luck.
Doesent sound too bad....was that with a recon alternator...design 911 seem to be about £280 just for the part! Cant be more than 2 hours to replace then?
Thanks for the response...heard rumours and sucking of teeth and hushed whispers of £1000!
Got mine in at an indy in Christchurch in the morning so hoping its more like the £400 mark!
Got the car back this afternoon from John Mitchell in Christchurch after dropping it off this morning.
Was an expensive visit at £550 plus vat - new alternator, fitting and a new shiny belt to protect my new investment and some additional investigation on the cars electronic systems.
Alternator charging eratically and spiked up to 16v+ with a heart stopping moment when the PSM/ ABS shut down in response when dropping it off this morning. Probably lucky not to have fried the electronics. Fortunate no damage done and asked that they check all the systems to ensure they were operational - all clear fortunately.
I was pleased with the prompt attentive service and will be using them again
