Sometime it can pay to have your discs skimmed on a lathe / disc skimming machine if you are changing compound pad on the same disc.

Keen to know what the consensus is, do you run a second set of pads on your old disks or do you replace your disks everytime you change pads?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey,
Keen to know what the consensus is, do you run a second set of pads on your old disks or do you replace your disks everytime you change pads?
My Wear sensor indicator is on so it's time for pads but the disks are looking very good with marginal wear. Don't like the idea of turning them into paperweights if they're ok.

Ditto, even after 2 pad only changes and then a disc and pad change there was still loads of life left in mine... Get yourself a set of brake disc measuring calipers and just keep an eye on them... :thumb:
No no, you can't use verniers to do the job, you have to use micrometers. If you use a vernier the lip on the outer edge will always read the original thickness. You need to use a micrometer to get into the central meat of the disc to get a true reading. Apologies if I'm stating the obvious and you meant micrometer however.
Oh, and many sets of pads on same discs. Sometime it can pay to have your discs skimmed on a lathe / disc skimming machine if you are changing compound pad on the same disc. This will remove the old pad material on the disc giving you a fresh surface to bed on. Bear in mind however this can take a half mm off the thickness.

Yup! I
always
renew my discs when I change the pads.
....just like I get a new 911 when the old one runs out of that smelly flammable stuff that makes it go!!!!!
(It's just a joke. Not a good one, granted! Nonetheless, it is just a joke and I'm
not
looking for any trouble, OK!?)
I'm about to do the opposite - replace my front discs but not pads. Disc and pads are 20k old, loads left on the pads but discs have ridged badly on the inner edge (car lives outside etc) so will do the discs and rub the pads down with an emery board to remove the ridges.
Chris. For the extra cost it might be an idea to just get new pads too...? Replacing the discs and then using the old pads is a bit of a no-no on any car! You'll be gutted if they wreck your nice new discs!
+1
All the labour is already there for the discs, which means the pads will be off the car. So just re-fit new ones?
They are only about £60 OEM or £120 Porsche (depending on model)
