Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I've installed the new cage and now I'm waiting for te HU to turn up.
Leading evidence: 'Install cage and now i'm waiting' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check car's model year - not registration date' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

First, check the car's model year - not registration date.

Suggestion
PCM1 is all hard-wired, whereas PCM2 uses the MOST (fibre-optic) system which isn't as easy to replace.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all
I'm a total Porsche newbie so be gentle. I've searched the forum but I'm a bit confused about some of the terms like PES and MOST that I keep reading about.
Here's a picture of the ICE in my 2001 911, can some kind soul tell me what model it is and if it's possible to replace it?
Many thanks,
Dan

You have PCM1. Yes, it is fairly straightforward to replace it with a more modern Double-DIN unit. PCM1 is all hard-wired, whereas PCM2 uses the MOST (fibre-optic) system which isn't as easy to replace.
PSE is the Porsche Sports Exhaust.
Hi Richard
Thanks for the quick reply.
Is is basically a case of getting an
Autoleads PC9-408
and a
Connects 2 CT23PO02
then a double din unit of my choice?
Can I also remove the SatNav-CD unit lower down and replace that with a singe din storage shelf, and does that need a facia too?
Cheers,
Dan
Not 100% sure about the lead. You certainly need the cable with the orange plug in that photo, but I guess it depends on what you are connecting it to. The one I have seen has phono-type connectors as shown here:
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120701787/Audi-Wiring-Harness.html?tp=2977
. I might have one of these surplus to requirements if you need it.
As for the cage and fascia - the new double-DIN kit should come with a cage, but the fascia looks useful. The trouble with PCM is that it is about 10mm taller than double-DIN. I bought a rather expensive kit from the USA, and didn't need most of it (hence the spare cable). The fascia was the only thing I used:
Hi Richard
Your picture above shows exactly what I would like to achieve - that looks
superb
.
I'm definitely interested in your spare connector, perhaps you could PM me with a price and I'll send you my address details.
I have a couple more questions, hope I'm not being a pain:
1. What is the proper name for the single din holder you have have installed above the aircon controls? I'm searched but I'm coming up empty.
2. I've searched the forum but didn't find a guide to removing the PCM - do you know of one?
I'll order the head unit (still researching this) and fascia adaptor in the week and attempt the install next weekend if I can gather all of the correct information.
Thanks,
Dan
The official name in the parts catalogue is "Shelf". Imaginitive, these Germans.

I'll drop you a PM later when I have found the connector. I know it's somewhere in my garage...........
So a little more research indicates that there are 2 different adaptors as shown on
this
page.
The difference catering for head units with or without pre-amplified outputs available.
I also noted various threads with Richard H and James J saying words to the effect of:
So I think I'm almost set, it's just the
how-to
get the old radio out bit that I'm needing help with. Any advice of this greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Richard posted the how-to instruction before I could send this message - Legend!
You need to establish exactly what you have got.
First, check the car's model year - not registration date. Look at the 10th digit of the VIN. 1=MY2001, 2=MY2002.
Then check the option code sticker. Look for (M)490 and (M)680, which are both 6-speaker packages (ie have door speakers).
MY2001:
M490 - Harman Amplifier Package
M680 - Digital Sound Processing. (A funny equaliser thingy).
MY2002:
M490 - Harman Amplifier Package
M680 - BOSE Analogue Package.
If you haven't got M490 or M680, then you will just have the standard 4-speaker setup, in which case the unit will (almost) be plug-and-play and you won't need any extra cables.
OK so it's a 2001 using the VIN details described above, I could not find an option code sticker.
I did remove the radio and have taken some pictures, hopefully these will help ID everything.
This looks like the AMP (maybe)
These look like leads for a CD changer (missing)
Is this the pad I need to cover with electrical tape?
Front of radio
Back of radio
Various stickers on the side of the radio
Now I remember.......
PCM1 has those two 26-pin plugs for a lot of the inputs/outputs. Is there another plug on the back I can't see in the photo? There are no amplifier-to-PCM connections shown on the diagrams which is very confusing.
I've emailed you the wiring diagrams and option codes for your car.
The alarm contact has a brown&blue wire connected to it.
Well it's all looking good so far. I've recieved the harness adaptor (thanks Richard) and the fascia kit. Once the kit was in front of me it all made sense.
I've installed the new cage and now I'm waiting for te HU to turn up. What seemed like a daunting process has really been very straight forward thanks to the help recived here.
Huge thanks to everyone and especially Richard.
