You can put all the material you can fit in the door and I don't think it will measurably change the sound (assuming nothing is loose inside the door and your strike plate is adjusted correctly).
Leading evidence: 'Adjust correctly)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust correctly)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. I just had my doors installed with Dynamat when they installed my Focal speakers and I actually do notice a minor decrease in noise- it is marginal however.

I was just joking with you that is why I used the Smilies.

check the door striker and lacth bolts they tend to loosen up and casue noises.

My attempting such changes just to try and make the door closing sound more to your tastes you may also create future problems for yourself.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I was merely informing the poster of the OEM sound dampening or lack thereof as he asked about a reduction in road noise from using sound dampening material in the doors.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've noticed that my door has a sort of hollow sound when it gets closed, akin to a Honda Civic Hybrid. Not a bad sound mind you but one that I wouldn't associate with Porsche. Would redoing the inside of the door panel with dynamat or a similar product improve the sound of the door closing? I'm looking for that bank vault kind of sound and yes I know sound deadening material adds weight. Also, how much road noise would be cut out?
Maybe not related, but when you open the door does the window open a fraction and then close again once the door is shut?
On the sound proofing idea, somehow I doubt you will find any room to put it or put enough in to make any measurable difference.
The window assembly fills up the centre of the door and there is not much room to do anything behind the panelling.
I actually think you worry far too much about irrelevant things like door sounds when it closes. Each model is different. The 964 clatters when the door is shut. My 996 closes with a thump that I am happy with because I don't care really. All I am concerned with is that the door shuts.
As for the Porsche door closing sound. The 924 you could hardly hear close, the 944 rattled andd groaned. The GT-2 sounded hollow because the door was. All heavy stuff had been removed. No central locking and no electric windows.
Is this your first Porsche?
Ciao,
Adrian.
While sound dampening material can not hurt, it is unlikely that any significant amount of road noise will be reduced. The reason for this, is that the rest of the cabin is not well insulated from road noise. If you look under the front seats you will notice the bare metal of the floor. Similarly the areas around the rear wheel wells have limited sound deadening material. If your intent is to quite the cabin you will have to go further than just the doors. If your intent is to just make the doors thunk when closed I dont know what the outcome will be.
That's why it's called a Sportscar and not a Limo.
Road noise, tyre noise, exhaust noise, clunking suspension, the smell of hot oil; this is the real Porsche experience.
Ciao,
Adrian.
You forgot finicky HVAC and squealing brakes.
I never suggested the cars should be Lexus quiet. In fact it is something I have always loved about sports cars in general and have never attempted to change. I am most definitely in the camp more likely to order Porsche's overpriced PSE for the extra aural stimulation. I was merely informing the poster of the OEM sound dampening or lack thereof as he asked about a reduction in road noise from using sound dampening material in the doors.
Brian,
I was just joking with you that is why I used the Smilies. I just translated your nicer words into a more down to earth way of saying we drive Sportscars not Limos.
Ciao,
Adrian.
No worries from me. I guess I came across a little rough but I think it was the lack of caffeine talking (office is out of Diet Mt. Dew
) I knew what your were saying.
check the door striker and lacth bolts they tend to loosen up and casue noises.
as far as sound deadening, it would make a noticible diffrence and you dont need to add that much one cheet along the inside of the door skin would do the trick
The windows do open slightly when the door is opened and close a bit when the door is closed. I think the sound of the door closing is very relevant. If you are unhappy with the exhaust you change it. Then why not the door as well? If I had a track car then it'd be different but as this is my daily driver I'd like the doors to sound solid. To each his own right? And yes it's my first Porsche.
The biggest problem with trying to get the 'bank vault' sound is that the 996 has frameless windows. You can put all the material you can fit in the door and I don't think it will measurably change the sound (assuming nothing is loose inside the door and your strike plate is adjusted correctly).
The seal saver dropping the window just as it closes also keeps it from having that "sealed" sound.
My old 924 actually sounded more solid when shutting the door. oh well.
You can do what you like of course, but there are some things you can change and others you cannot. My attempting such changes just to try and make the door closing sound more to your tastes you may also create future problems for yourself.
The doors are already a water trap as they are in every Porsche model, but made a little worse in having no window frame.
Adding sound proofing may increase the door's ability to hold water, ruin your internal door trim and it may eventually start to stink. If the sound proofing starts to come apart it's likely to fall through the frame holes and end up jamming the window mechanism.
If you have leather trim on the doors it will even start to grow mold under the right conditions.
You would need to select your sound proofing material very carefully and don't use the Porsche stuff because that is the world's greatest sponge.
I also believe that you will not change anything by adding sound proofing anyway. Try draping a blanket over the inside of the door. This might give you a clue as to what you might be able to achieve.
The other choice is to sell the Porsche and purchase something with more suitable door closing sounds for your taste.
Ciao,
Adrian.
