changed he air filter today and the poll filter, cleaned the plastic casing, cleaned the throttle body but not by removing the green nuts, instead I sprayed carb cleaner and reved it like hell, cleaned the entire body and blew lots of crap out, sounds fantastic, no more sluggish or rev searching.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I was coming through town today and all of a sudden it was like the car was running out of fuel and sluggish so I reved it and managed to pull into a side road, stood still and the rev was moving up and down by itself between 700 - 1000. I turned off the engine and and started it up and it was fine, came home checked the ait filter, looked really blocked so i cleaned it and put it back, seems okay now? any ideas? new fuel pump already fitted 6 months ago, could problem be air filter? carrera 996 c2

POST 2Original post

Carbon build up in the butterfly valve... Mine did almost the exact same thing, like it was rev searching and almost stalled at a couple of sets of traffic lights. Got the advice from here to clean the butterfly valve/ throttle body with carb cleaner. Never had the problem again since... :thumb:

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hey first of all thanks for answering, do you know the post that explains how and where to clean? thanks again mate, i feel so much better now

POST 4Original post

Open the engine bay, take the air box out so that you can see the throttle body like this... I removed the throttle body by undoing the 4 green nuts shown. I CAREFULLY used a spray carb cleaner and lint free cloth to clean the black build up. Then put everything back together. It's very straight forward and doesn't take too long. :thumb:

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

excellent, thankyou very much, I will get onto this first thing in the morning

POST 6Original post

As yours is an early car with mechanical throttle, you might also want to clean out the idle control valve, which is screwed to the side of the throttle body. They can also gum up and cause an erratic idle.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

changed he air filter today and the poll filter, cleaned the plastic casing, cleaned the throttle body but not by removing the green nuts, instead I sprayed carb cleaner and reved it like hell, cleaned the entire body and blew lots of crap out, sounds fantastic, no more sluggish or rev searching. thanks, you saved me £800 thanks both of you.
