Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I fitted all sorts but the ones I had recently were REALLY good.
Leading evidence: 'Install sorts' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install sorts' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

With winter here now especially since we've changed the clocks, I'm doing a lot more driving in the dark. My car is a stock 996 C4 Cab, MY 2000, with what I believe are bog standard halogen lights, dipped and main. I'd like to upgrade these in the most simple, cost effective, diy way.
I've trawled back through the site postings for quite a while and most of the advice seems to refer to Litronics which I don't think I have.
I'm thinking the most practical thing would be to upgrade the dipped beam with one of these HID kits but not sure which to go for, or how effective they are. Also are they legal?
So, could anyone who has done a similar upgrade let me know their opinions - is it worth doing? At the moment the standard lights are like a 'candle in a jar' and pretty useless for swift night driving.
Are these HID kits the only option or is there anything else such as simply putting in larger watt bulbs? (Although I would worry about the extra wattage melting something expensive!)
Thanks for the advice! 8)
I bought a 50W 6000K HID kit from
www.hids-direct.co.uk
They were helpful before purchase with advice on the phone. Quick delivery. It's a while back now they were £75 for the complete kit, think they've gone down a tenner or so by now.
Much better (surprisingly better) than the standard candles. 6000k is a good (not very blue but pure white) level to go for.
VERY VERY easy to fit. H7. You won't be disappointed.
I put them on the dipped beam only.

I understood that all HID Kits available on the uK market were in fact not MOT Legal ..... and also could iinvalidate

You have the earlier fried-egg style lamps without litronic (small glass domes) which means you have plastic lens.
50w is ok on the facelift lights with a glass dome but as yours support the plastic lens you need 6000k 35w H7 conversion kit if you went as high as 50w it may Yellow the lens and defeat the objective. Prices vary from £60 to £300 for these kits. There are quality differences out there, the better ones have heavy ballasts.
As for the legal MOT hype thats about I will put you straight.
If a car has HiD fitted at the factory it must also have headlamp washers.
If the kit is fitted after it left the factory as an aftermarket upgrade headlamp washers are not required but the beam pattern will need to comply with the MOT regs. (This will not be an issue on your car)
If you wish to verify what I have said just call and speak to your local MOT station.

Great advice, thanks guys. Excellent video too. Just got off the phone with Hids4u and they have sold out of H7 kits since the clocks changed! Guess everyone had the same idea.
Bang on sir :thumb:
Some of the cheap ones really are cheap if you know what I mean. The ballasts feel like empty tin boxes where as the good ones resemble OEM, heavy cast alloy case with obviously more inside.
Some say the slim type are best as they require less room:

I will have to look at the make I have been fitting when I get home, can not remember for the life of me.

Get back to you later :thumb:
You could fit 100W bulbs. Obvious disadvantages, but a good deal brighter than standard. Lucas do a set of pure white 100W rally bulbs. Only for use on private roads you understand
