This is not my first time and This is not my second time. My A/C ( temp ) ( low high ) buttons are like flaking apart. I don't think I can order the buttons either. I think I have to order the whole a/c assembly. This is a minor issue but it all adds up to really disappoint me. The quality of the porsche shouldn't be like this in my opinion. Also I am in Taiwan now and my car is not an authorized local porsche so I get no warranty. So I guess my solution is the paint the buttons. ( this really sucks )
A quick snap shot of my interior with the same type of paint that porsche uses on most of the interior parts.
I'm having the same issue on the climate control buttons, and ash try cover.
I don't use ANYTHING but a damp rag to clean the interior parts that aren't leather. I'm not sure what's causing this, but I agree it's frustrating.
If it’s under warranty take it to the Dealer. It should be covered.
I had the same problem on my AC and power window switch. I agree, this never happened on a $17,000 car and shouldn't happen on a Porsche. The part Number for the repair is: 997-653-111-14-FHM. They replaced them all under warranty for no charge. Hopefully you can argue that these repairs should be covered. Best of luck.
The "soft touch" plastics in Porsches are prone to this type of damage when touched with various types of lotions and oils.
Sunscreen has long been known to dissolve the plastics in 986 Boxsters, and the plastics are no different in 987 Boxsters or Caymen.
I would take it into the dealer anyway just to see what they say.
I have the same issue on my fan switch and also the knob for control functions on the PCM, so will be fighting (I guess) to get it replaced under warranty.
interior pain problem
Hi to all with the paint problems.
So far i have changed (within the warranty) climate knob, ash tray and now it is coming
the plastic rim which sits just below the door glove compartment lid. Paint is coming off there too. who knows what is next. I have two more months to go with my warranty but most likely I will buy extended warranty at the end. I do not want my car interior to look like Dalmatian skin; all dotted.
In addition, thank you for insight for the window knob. I guess, will try not to open-close window often. In fact, I have beige interior, does it happen to gray interiors too. Maybe my next car should be black - gray interior, or it is better to switch to COROLA or CAMRY just in case. Stupid paint... who is painting interior plastic today in car industry anyway.
I am disappointed that this masterpiece of engineering has those ridiculous problems.
For some of this we only have to blame ourselves.
We want a $70k car to look fantastic and luxurious, and for a lot of the plastic pieces there is no another way for them to look proper but to paint them, and getting paint to stick on plastic is not always an easy task.
Would you rather have a cheap looking piece of black molded plastic as a window switch, or one that is painted exactly to match the color of the interior? It won't matter much in a $18k car, but it does in a Porsche.
I turned in a leased Audi a couple years back that had just about EVERY painted piece of the interior replaced over the course of 4 years. I got to know my service person so well I just called him up and told him the part that was bad, he would order it, and I'd drive into the service bay where it was quickly swapped.
Believe me the manufactures already have items such as these priced into the car. The Audi service rep confirmed it. Luxury look and feel sells the cars, and for the manufactures its an equal trade for some of these items to be replaced. After all they are just painted plastic pieces, fairly cheap to them.
I've got a gray interior. It still looks great. I had a black Boxster with a black interior. It always looked good.
On the other hand, my wife's last three cars (Mercedes) have had beige interiors and a lot of the finish rubbed off the knobs, door handles, etc. of those three cars.
As BillK said, things like sunscreen and lotions can do a lot of damage to interior parts. (I have several acoustic guitars. Sunscreen and lotions will take the finish off in a heartbeat.)
As dreis44 said, stick to a damp rag when you clean interior parts.
