I'm getting a loudish whirring noise, during normal driving, on my 06 CS. The noise is there all the time, but gets louder as the shift point approaches. It's loud enough to drown out the engine growl, which is what makes it annoying. I've had the car a few days, so this may be an entirely normal noise. It hasn't got any worse over the few days I've had it.
I tried to record it, but that didn't work so well. However, this noise is exactly the same.

It starts at 11-12 seconds, and gets louder as the engine revs at 15 seconds. And then at 18-20. It's a mid-high range whirring noise, almost a whine, but not as high pitched.
Any thoughts? Is it normal, or something worth driving back to the dealer for?
I'd have that checked by the dealer.
Although I've no experience of it myself, a few guys have posted that a failing water pump tends to whine before it lets go.
I'm really not trying to be alarmist or worry you but it sounds like a likely candidate, let the dealer check it out and put your mind at rest.
Definitely not a normal sound. A bearing or belt if I had to guess but get it back to the dealer ASAP.
Had the same issue about 2 weeks ago. It finally got so bad I took my
Cayman
to my dealer. They thought it was the water pump but it turned out to be the tensioner pulley. Took about 4 hours to change it out and the noise is completely gone. Fortunately, I purchased the extended warranty so it was repaired at no cost to me. The invoice did not show any prices since it was warrantied but I did ask how much it would have been if it was the water pump. I was told $900 to $1000. Ouch! I think replacement of the tensioner pulley is about half of that cost.
Thanks for the input. I did show the dealer the video, and will take it in to them on monday.
Thanks for the info. Mine is also under warranty -- let's hope whatever it is falls under CPO.
Hi all
"nag mail"
.......had lower tensioner pulley change....nope...new starter....nope....topped off PS fluid nope....
The "whirr/whine" is making me crazy in that it at time trumps the engine/
exhaust
music we all love.....
Any similar issues and resolutions - MUCH appreciated.
In Mass we are having a decent winter for driving....325 miles this weekend....visited the coast

987s are well known for premature water pump impeller failures, even on very low mileage cars, so that would be my first guess considering yours is at near 200K unless you have already recently replaced it.
I had an
alternator
bearing problem in my 981BS. I had a heck of a time isolating it. The whine pitch increased with engine RPMs, so it seemed related to the drive belt, but I couldn't hear anything with the seat-back engine compartment panel opened. From underneath, it sounded like it was coming from all over the engine bay. With a stethoscope, the worst area seemed to be at the water pump outlet, but it was bad even in the oil pan and it resonated all through the engine and back into the transmission, which really had me worried since I was 9 months out of warranty.
Here is a link to the thread I posted on the issue, along with a few videos of the noise and finally, the tiny bit of slop in the
alternator
bearings that caused that gawd-awful racket.

The tech said the noise was so bad because the coolant tunnels through the engine pick up and amplify the noise and carry it through the engine and even into the transmission because it resonates through the aluminum coolant lines.
BTW - To help diagnose, the tech pulled the drive belt off and started the car. If the noise goes away, you know for certain it's one of the components attached to it.
