I got this error the day I picked up my brand new Cayman R while driving down the road without the headlights on, and the dealership has as of yet not been able to fix the problem even after checking all the wiring and replacing modules with ones from the Boxster Spyder they have in the showroom.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hello....i need help. i already searched and nothing came up. i was wondering if anyone else has encountered this error message on their dash? what is it and how do i get rid of it? or do i just have to take it in to the dealership??
Per the manual
"Automatic Headlight Beam
Adjustment
Vehicles with Litronic
headlights
feature automatic
headlight beam adjustment.
When the ignition is switched on, the level of the
headlight beam automatically changes in accordance
with the vehicle load.
The level of the headlight beam is automatically
kept constant during acceleration and braking.
Checking operation
1. Switch the low beam on.
2. Switch ignition on.
The light beam first dips all the way down and
is then adapted to the vehicle load.
The level of the low beam rises perceptibly
when the high beam is switched on.
If these test items are not met, the headlight beam
adjustment must be checked by an authorized
Porsche dealer."
Try the test before going to the dealer. Hope this help.
I got this error on my
Cayenne
and when I turned off the car, waited a few seconds and started it back up it didn't return. I'm still taking it in to the dealer to investigate. I'd suggest you do the same, especially if it doesn't go away after you switch off the car.
I've noticed this error to appear when my car has been sitting for long periods of time. Once started, the lights function fine and when I shut off the car and restart it, the error doesn't appear again. - Suneet
headlight beam adjustment faulty message
Did you guys change the light bulbs in your headlights before the warning message came on? I had my high beam bulbs changed and afterwards the warning message came on. And I don't want to make a trip to the dealership if I can fix it myself.
Re: headlight beam adjustment faulty message
I wanted to bring this thread back up to see if anyone recently has seen this error. I got this error the day I picked up my brand new Cayman R while driving down the road without the headlights on, and the dealership has as of yet not been able to fix the problem even after checking all the wiring and replacing modules with ones from the Boxster Spyder they have in the showroom. The dealership believes it has to do with the software in the PSM module having a glitch while apparantly Porsche does not agree. I have already been without my car for 5 days as they troubleshoot, and I get less and less confident in them finding a fix.
Re: headlight beam adjustment faulty message
Not to make you feel any worse than you already feel but read up on lemon laws in your state and start asap gathering paperwork, doing what you have to do to build a case, gather up a nice paper trail, should it come to this.
I'm sure the dealer will eventually get the problem sorted out but just in case better to have the paperwork and the paper trail and not need it than to need it and not have it.
If the dealer doesn't move as fast as you'd like remind the dealer one major factor in your decision to buy the car (and buy it from this dealer if you indeed did buy the car from this dealer) was the assurances of the dealer's professional, factory trained repair techs.
Remind the dealer of its assurances that its service department could deliver the level of service you expected when you shopping for the car.
Sincerely,
Rockster.
I had this issue. Stealer told me the front end controller had to be condemned. I took it away unplugged my
battery
and hey presto, bye bye error and unit and auto levelling works fine. These units are prone to static discharge.
It didn´t work for me, I removed the
battery
but the message keep showing the same error.
And now the key is not released when I turn off the car (LOL)!
Thanks anyway but any sugestions to solve the key problem??
OP... I'm glad you got it sorted out.
OP and everybody else... does anybody know how this works? Seems odd to me that the self-leveling function of
headlights
is somehow related to a component that mounts to a rear suspension piece. I'm very curious what's actually going on with that bracket.
I have one of these faults!
I had my
headlights
out to remove my bumper and and do some other work and last night I got this fault. I checked the sensor arm in the photo above and it all looks fine.
I hear a high pitch noise, that sounds like it comes from the headlight, when I turn the
headlights
on. I assume it's the actual adjuster inside the headlight housing.
I'm going to go to a independant shop on Tuesday to have it checked out.
Any thoughts?
I have pulled the
headlights
back out and put them back in. I disconnected the
battery
and reconnected it. Unplugged the sensor and plugged it back in. When i get home today I am going to disconnect all the items I added to the car when I plugged them into the open slots in the fuse box. Stereo, laser interceptor, back up cam, etc etc
Hmm... never mind then. Pulled the car out of the garage and the problem seems to have gone away.
OH, then I found a screw in my new rear tire, it has about ten miles on it. No sweat, I have a plugging kit. Ooops, I broke the handle off the tool that pushes the
plug
in and the broken part took a nice piece of skin off the inside of my finger! Off to get a new plugging kit....
Hi Guys - Been a while since I've had any issue with the
Cayman
, but I've been getting this error. Where can I find the diagram to view the related parts, like part #21 referenced above. Thanks!
You don't even say what MY you have and to want to know what part #21 is? Download the PET for your MY and look in the HID parts diagram. On a 987.2, it looks like its a plastic C clip ( 997.631.245.00 "locking device"). This is part of the mounting mechanism. But that is a very generic error message, so it could be anything. I'd take it apart and see it anything is broken.
BTW, this is an old thread and no telling what MY (or model) the various posts applied to. The guy who mentioned #21 hasn't logged-in to P-9 in 5 yrs.
Thanks - It's been a while since I've logged in as well, thought my vehicle details were listed.
2007 Cayman
, joined back in 2009 with 12k miles, now have 103k with minimal issues. I was able to clear the code with the Durametric and test the up/down which seemed to work fine, so I'm guessing it is a sensor like the one mentioned above. I did a search for the part diagram on here, but was unsuccessful. Is it on this site? Thanks for your help.
Yes, I guess I could of opened your profile and then opened "My Vehicles" to find more info. But I think that's a little much to expect. That's why I put the pertinent info in my signature.
I don't know what PET stands for, but that's what
Porsche
calls its parts catalogs. A quick Google search only turned-up one for the 2008
Cayman
, but that should be close enough.
2008 Cayman Catalog
I'm only guessing that #21 referred to some parts diagram in the catalog. But IDK what else it could be. I doubt it was some hashtag for a Trump tweet:crazy:
This may be the information you are asking about.

Photo shows left front lower suspension with the sensor and linkage that form part of the HID auto leveling system. There is a similar setup on the left rear, too.
