This is a new one to me, anyone else experience this...
I aligned my car with summer tires (Conti Extreme Sport) 235/40/18 265/40/18. Car drives great, tire wear is normal, steering wheel is centered.
I just switched to my new winter tires (ContiWinterContact TS830P) 235/40/18 255/40/18. The car tracks straight but the steering wheel is off center.
Switch back to summer tires, steering wheel is centered.
Switch back to winter tires, steering wheel is off center.
Any thoughts?
I have an email out to Continental to see if they can shed any light on this.
Thanks
That's a weird one. When you say "
car tracks straight but the steering wheel is off center" do you mean that to keep a straight line you need to hold the wheel off center? Or is it that you can let go of the wheel and the car stays straight but the wheel is pointing off?
The only thing that comes to mind offhand is that there is a size difference between the tires. Maybe a big inflation difference, or one of the rear wheels is accidentally on the front?
Since the snows are new check that a front tire wasn't mounted on a rear wheel and vice versa.
Don't know if it would cause this but if the tires are asymmetric or directional you might as well verify that they're not mounted backwards while checking the tire wheel combination.
Great suggestion, Les, I hadn't thought of that one.
One other thought. Check the wheel offsets to make sure the tire shop didn’t slip in one that was different from the opposite wheel side to side.
And let us know what you find.
Here's where it stands now...
To clarify what I said earlier, the car tracks straight with hands off the wheel but the wheel is 5-10 degrees off with the winter tires on.
I emailed Continental and they said it could be "radial pull" from the description.
I brought the tires back to the shop and they switched the front wheels left to right, and looked at the tires. They came to the conclusion that the two fronts should be replaced, which is being done under Continentals 60 day no questions asked trial period (just barely made it.)
I'm actually skeptical that both front tires are bad, but getting them replaced now before the 60 day trial period is over is what's going to happen. Will see if this makes any difference.
From a glance it appears that the front tires are mounted correctly on the front rims vs. the back rims due to the width difference but I will go back to double check as well when I have the wheels off. I also believe the offsets are the same on the front but again I can't directly recall so I will check that as well. Thanks for the ideas.
