Just thought i'd let you know, just been in touch with AFN Reading about my car and this recall, the guy there checked my chassis number against their computer system and said that my car has no recalls outstanding against it, and he's sure that the system is up to date.

Possible symptoms are lumpy, uneven running, engine going out for no apparent reason, starting problems.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Nice one Walter. Exactly the type of post we need together with the debates, wind ups and general motoring malarky. DAZ Edited to say: Walter I have copied some of the text to a Nurburgring based discussion forum. I trust this to be OK? >> Edited by dazren on Wednesday 1st January 00:27

POST 2Original post

Hi Guys, There's been a lot of discussion about this on the Rennlist 993 forum - i think it was actually our American cousins who got Porsche Cars North America to admit there was a problem after they shared information on Rennlist. Nice to see that it's a public issue now. I guess my Dutch imported 1996 car may be susceptible to this engine wiring loom problem so i'll be getting in touch with AFN Reading (my local OPC) tomorrow. Happy New Year to one and all. www.VerySideways.com

POST 4Original post

I beleive it is just 993's that are affeted.specifically the '94-'95 models...As stated the recall started in the states, but there seem to be quite a few UK owners who have been back to OPC for the new wiring loom...Above was read from Rennlist over the last few months.

POST 5Original post

The recall code is CT16 (I've had mine done), there's been a lot about it on the titanic 993 mailing list as well. Cheers, Laurence

Just thought i'd let you know, just been in touch with AFN Reading about my car and this recall, the guy there checked my chassis number against their computer system and said that my car has no recalls outstanding against it, and he's sure that the system is up to date. My car has a build date of May 1996 i think, first registered July 1996. Phew. New tyres this weekend for the rear though, 350 for the pair from Micheldever (285/30ZR18 Conti N2's). www.VerySideways.com

POST 7Original post

Does any one know if this applies to the 993 RS,(I think they may have a different wiring loom??)as my local dealer is not up to speed on this yet.. Thanks and happy new year!

POST 8Original post

Guys, had to do this work on my '93 993. it is only 93-94 models that are affected (you'll be pleased to know) but you won't be so happy to hear the Porsche Cars GB almost totally wash their hands of it. They told me in no uncertain terms that I could whistle for any refund of the £700 bill to repair it. I only threw out the old loom about a week ago when clearing the garage - total mess with all the insulation missing and the wires shorting out. I can give full details of what to look for/affected part number/how to fix etc if anyone wants to mail me offline.

POST 9Original post

Scottster. If you still have the receipt I'd send a copy of it to Germany and ask them to refund the work in light of the companies recent recall. You can also point out Porsche GB's approach of "Go f..k yourself" on the basis your car didn't pass through their sales network when first sold. The point is it was a porsche that left the factory and not to put too fine a point on it it was "f....d" when it rolled off the assembly line due to "dangerous and unfit" components. cheers DAZ Edited to tone down the language a bit. There could be young uns reading. >> Edited by dazren on Thursday 2nd January 20:41

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

back in the homeland -as opposed to the "fatherland". Of course you can copy my message Daz, so can anyone else. I had it from "Auto, Motor & Sport". The recall is supposed to affect the build years 1994 - 1996, so check if your 993 (no mater what model) is affected by querying your chassis no. with your Porsche dealer. Scottster, follow Dazs advice and contact Porsche Stuttgart. A recall is a recall is a recall, and Porsche pays, and there should be no comebacks and no queries. Porsche GB's reaction IS a disgrace. Rgds WalterU PS: sorry to have been the purveyor of bad news. Don't kill the messenger ...

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

By the way, the news article said "years 1994 - 1996". Although they did not clarify this in the article, they presumably mean "build years or models 1994 - 1996". To understand what this means you have to know the inside workings of the german car industry. They are all sent off in the summer for 3-4 weeks of factory holidays in July/August. A comparatively small team of speciailists stays behind to set up new production lines etc., and then the "new" models are built. Hence a 1994 model or "1994 build year" is built from late August 1993 onwards, and build year 1996 rund from August 1995 to July 1996. Hope this helps. Rgds, WalterU

POST 12Original post

Interesting you mention those dates, because my car was built in May 1996 and i understand from Porsche Cars GB that my car IS NOT affected by this recall. Should i take their word for it or get in touch with Stuttgart? www.VerySideways.com

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the article did not specifically say that all cars in those build years are affected. For all I know they may have cottoned on to something being wrong and changed the looms mid-year. I would check with Porsche Stuttgart. I am a very busy man. But, being german-speaking, I would be happy to check for you with Stuttgart. Only under condition that you understand that I'm busy and it make take me several weeks. The offer stands for anyone else in doubt about their car. Rgds, WalterU P.S.: if needed get in touch by email. >> Edited by WalterU on Saturday 4th January 20:50

POST 14Original post

FYI I have emailed the lady who told me I have no grounds for a claim on PCGB requesting how I should proceed now the cars have been officially recalled - I'll keep you posted.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm back in the "fatherland" for New Year, and have just read a news item in "Auto, Motor & Sport", the most respected car magazine in Germany, that I thought so important that I'd post it right away. All 911's (993's) built between 1994 and 1996 are to be recalled. This is a total of around 35000 cars, 12000 of them in Germany. Over time the insulation of cabling leading to the engine can fail. This will lead to shorts, possibly engine fires. Possible symptoms are lumpy, uneven running, engine going out for no apparent reason, starting problems. This will also tend to end in catalyser damage. This may explain some of the problems some people have been having. Please check if your car is one of the affected ones. Porsche has said that it will write to all concerned, But if your car is a 2nd hand one, they won't know your address - in this case I would get in touch with your preferred Porsche dealer. I hope to have been of assistance and wish all fellow Porsche lovers a wonderful new year and an always running engine ... Rgds, WalterU >>> Edited by WalterU on Tuesday 31st December 20:03
