I fitted them up as high as I could , the nuts made it a bit tricky getting to the heads of the little bolts .Tip when fitting , remove one bolt , leave one in but only just catching the thread , pull apart and slip over the shaft , this will allow you to hold the collar and slightly tighten the bolt , then put in the other bolt and tighten evenly bit by bit on each side until the collar grips , then slide into desired position before fully tightening, I used a size 10 hex bit driver , the collars were from RS components, I haven’t adjusted them as sounds great with the valves fully open .

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Recent purchase of a 718 Spyder pdk and although it sounds great when you are on it up in the revs, even with the exhaust knocked on it's just a little muted lower in the revs under normal driving, I drove my 981 3.4 GTS pdk this week with its blips on the downshift and exhaust crackling so when I switched back into the 718 it almost felt like someone had pushed the mute button. Just wondering what is out there and if anyone would share their experiences if they have fitted or modified anything.

POST 2Original post

I have a rear silencer on my GT4. There are also over axle pipes (OAPs) without GPFs and different exhaust headers. All induce drone and resonance to varying degrees, all are expensive and some require an engine re-map. My advice? Don't bother with any of them and love the car for what it is.

POST 3Original post

6mm grub screws in vacuum pipes. Sounds epic and costs £2.

POST 4Original post

Definitely pull the valves. I also added a JCR back box and I am pleased with the improvement. However in my opinion it will never sound as good as the 981 particularly if you enjoyed the pops and farts

I find it does drone in the Cayman but not in the Spyder. so much so I’m going to take the Cargraphic controller off the Cayman in the next couple of weeks.

POST 8Original post

Good point - Spyders do respond differently, thanks for the correction Caymans seem to be a drone magnet...

Available here: https://rennlist.com/forums/718-gts-4-0-gt4-gt4rs-... Easily reversible if you don't like it! I've done this on mine, works a treat and cost £9.00. The sound is still no where near as good as a 981 with PSE but it does stop the car going quiet from around 2k - 4k revs in first and second. Took 10 minutes to fit and can easily be removed if required.

POST 10Original post

Same. I have mine set to about a quarter of an inch from the ball joint shoulder and there's no drone but there is a little more sound from the inside from 2-4k rpm which is what I wanted. I'd suggest placing the collars right down on the shoulder and adjust according to your liking.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

great info, simple solution and sounds like it will give the note where its needed, have just ordered a couple up online, £9 plus postage sounds a bargain !

POST 12Original post

Well it is quite sunny today up here. I just drove window down and in manual (PDK) on b roads and motorway with PSE and PDK sport on . The sound was so glorious especially from 3K to 8K. The crescendo to 8K is so nice and when upshift near the redline, the burping/beeping sounds are so thrilling. I really enjoy the aimless driving and I am so grateful that I am an owner of this car.

POST 13Original post

Done the mod , bit fiddly , but works a treat , gives life to the lower rev range .

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

are you Cayman or Boxster ? what's the noise level like low down and does it drone at cruising speed ? guessing now the exhaust button makes no difference as its fully open all the time? spice said: I fitted them up as high as I could , the nuts made it a bit tricky getting to the heads of the little bolts .Tip when fitting , remove one bolt , leave one in but only just catching the thread , pull apart and slip over the shaft , this will allow you to hold the collar and slightly tighten the bolt , then put in the other bolt and tighten evenly bit by bit on each side until the collar grips , then slide into desired position before fully tightening, I used a size 10 hex bit driver , the collars were from RS components, I haven’t adjusted them as sounds great with the valves fully open .

POST 18Original post

Hi Jeff , its a Boxster 25 , no droning really even with roof up , maybe different in a Cayman ,car still needs to be in Sport for best sound , this activates the PSE anyway , otherwise the PSE button is obsolete, its a very effective cheap mod that can be easily reversed .

Part available here https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/shaft-collars/17467... These fit between the valve screws , a little more expensive but are the correct size and very well made, a bendy magnetic bit driver would make access easier , I managed ok with a short driver.

Even better. I did think that £30 was quite a lot… as it is I hadn’t gotten around to ordering, bit busy with clearing the decks at work, so I can enjoy the next couple of short weeks and associated track days!

Are the valves open when the engine is off then? In terms of where to put the collar on the shaft

POST 27Original post

I think so. The engine running will be used to create the vacuum which closes the valves. To be sure, you can briefly start the engine and press the exhaust button to open the valves, then turn the engine off.

POST 28Original post

john_1983 said: Are the valves open when the engine is off then? In terms of where to put the collar on the shaft Yes valves open, when the engine is off.

POST 29Original post

Thanks. I appreciate this isn't the biggest modification in the world, but has anyone had any OPC comments or warranty issues with these fitted? Or are you removing them before service?

POST 30Original post

I have a replacement silencer with no issues, I think you'll be fine with a couple of collars

POST 31Original post

Twinfan said: I have a replacement silencer with no issues, I think you'll be fine with a couple of collars May I ask what Silencer you have fitted ? are you happy with the tone ? while the collars offer a small improvement the tone and overrun is still way off my 987 RS60 .

POST 32Original post

I have a Ninemeister silencer in inconel and I'm very happy with it, YMMV of course. The key thing to note is that you cannot get the new 4.0 to sound anything like the older engines. Particulate filters and separated exhaust outlets are the reason why. You have to accept that they're different and change your aural expectations accordingly.

POST 33Original post

Twinfan said: The key thing to note is that you cannot get the new 4.0 to sound anything like the older engines. Particulate filters and separated exhaust outlets are the reason why. You have to accept that they're different and change your aural expectations accordingly. But equally, getting the older cars to go quite as well as the 4.0 on the track is a challenge too. OPC instructor initially struggled to accept that my 981 GT4 exhaust is all standard when I did the "Precision" course a few weeks ago. It was his first introduction to the original GT4, and he was initially stunned by the noise, the handling (after a setup), and the "raw" nature of the car. We were very soon stunned in a different way by the "stability control", which I knew wasn't anything like as good as the latest PSM. It turned out my inability to drive the ice hill and kicker plate neatly disappeared when we turned off stability management in the 981 GT4. Current newer version of PSM is definitely better at it than me. (But I make up for it with style and panache!. ) Overall, they tend to get better. I'll continue to live with the noise of my 981 GT4 quite happily. I'll also appreciate that my (hopefully) incoming 718 4.0 GTS is a load quieter and more refined. Temptation to hold exhaust valves open is minimal for me, but I hope others get to enjoy it. Liam

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Did my valves last week, the ones I ordered online didn’t show up so just went to a bearing place locally £4 inc vat , I fitted and set them about 8 mm back , sound has improved and it’s prob enough to hold my attention without spending mega money on a system whilst my car is still under warranty. On another note , does the 4.0 PDK blip the revs on the downshift , I’ve noticed mine doesn’t do it like my 981 used to but was watching a YouTube video of a bloke nailing his round a track and his appeared to be blipping… Edited by JeffC on Sunday 7th May 16:56

POST 35Original post

^^ needs to be in sport or spot + for the downshift blipping.

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not Ideal said: ^^ needs to be in sport or spot + for the downshift blipping. Hhmmmm I'm pretty sure mine (718 spyder pdk) doesn't have sport or sport plus button or not that I have noticed, it does have PDK sport but i'm almost sure it doesn't do it then either, my 981 has both sport and sport plus and indeed blips in either mode.

POST 38Original post

There's a difference between GTS mapping and GT car mapping, so the 981 Spyder will be different to a 718 Spyder. I think the PDK GT cars have a PDK "Sport" mode? GTS cars have Normal/Sport/Sport Plus driving modes which the GT cars don't have.

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So does the spyder and Gt4 PDK blip on downshifts ? Twinfan said: There's a difference between GTS mapping and GT car mapping, so the 981 Spyder will be different to a 718 Spyder. GTS cars have Normal/Sport/Sport Plus driving modes which the GT cars don't have. a quick look online at interior pics of 4.0 GTS and 25th edition / Pdk cars for sale and they don't appear to have any of those buttons or not in the centre console anyway, all the Spyder I have seen have the PDK sport button in the top left corner .

Ah, how strange the Spyder or GT4 doesn't get that, also noticed while looking, most of cars don't have the multi function steering wheel option either, something I thought was standard.

That's one of the great things about the GT cars - the lack of anything on the steering wheel! GT cars don't have driving modes, unlike the regular cars, so there's no need for the manettino dial.
