Suggestion
I enjoy surprising people by making turns without breaking and by coming to almost a stop with engine braking and using the brakes only at the last few feet.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Evening all,
Anyone else find themselves just cruising in the Porsche?! When I drive my 987
Cayman S
I’m in no rush. Most of the time I’m driving around in gear 4 anyway because of the high gear ratio as the speed limit around my area is only 30mph. This really doesn’t bother me though. Anyone else just enjoy driving the Porsche like that?
One thing that I've noted on my base
981
is that the
PDK
gets into 6th and 7th quick and stays there until coming to a stop. I'm driving around at 2000 RPM with a light foot and not hearing any protests from the engine. The roads around here top out at 55 generally and I rarely go much quicker. It's been a real experience with this car.
Sometimes I drive around in sport mode and it holds the rpm’s up a bit. But if I hit traffic I usually take it out of sport. Before the FVD tune normal mode was pretty lame but with the tune it’s perfectly fine to cruise around in. And sport is even more fun. I love the
PDK
. Yeah it can get to 6 or 7 quick, but that’s what paddles are for.
Absolutely. Low speeds in P-cars are great fun. Honestly, I think many of us will go take slower drives just to go cruise as P-cars aren't all about top speed. Remember -- it's also about handling and the overall experience. Why not?
I generally prefer to do my low-speed cruising in the
987.2
base 2.9L, and save the faster stuff for the
981
Outlaw (991.1S) 3.8L. 6MT and up/down-shifiting in both are a joy.
I'm a cruiser as well. I don't want to be "that guy" out there tearing up public roads. Instead, I try to be a kind of Porsche ambassador, fighting the prejudices and stereotypes that many harbor against the brand. Still, I like using Sport mode to add a little pep to things, even at low speeds. Sport + is sheer lunacy anywhere off-track, in my opinion.
On local roads - I generally find myself going the speed limit, unless it's a special road (with curves I know and enjoy) - I drive my Cayenne considerably faster on the local roads, I suspect that's due to it hiding the speed the car is actually going... more isolation from the road. And some of the local roads are breeding grounds for potholes waiting to be transplanted to Staten Island.. the rather firm suspension of the
Boxster
doesn't encourage speed on those roads. Plus kids and deer tend to make me slow down. We have some kids and hoards of deer. I don't want a deer in my lap - a real possibility when I'm running around top down in the
Boxster
. Not so much an issue with the Cayenne.. it would simply run over the deer.
Zeus,
Thanks for your post! I'll
find
reasons to drive the Porsche, it's just such a great experience. While I've driven higher-horsepower Porsches, the 987S is my go-to car. It is incredibly engaging, at all speeds. Personally, I think that the 987 is more fun to drive than cars such as the 991.2 GTS (they have so much power and do everything so easily, they are not that fun to drive unless you're really pushing them - which you can only do legally on the track). Enjoy the ride, my friend!
Yes - it is actually nice being able to really enjoy the car at all speeds and styles - you do not have to drive a certain way to love it... it is a Porsche after all. I like cruising along and seeing wannabes blasting by being cool (they think) knowing they would be toast if I got on it.
Yes, I do enjoy a occasional Saturday run into the foothills where there are some great mountain roads. I almost never take my 987 S out of sport mode. but I also never take it out in weather like we're having now in Northern California.
as for driving slow,? I don't enjoy cruising stop lights and intersections because in my area, which is heavy AG, there's mostly effing pickup trucks everywhere. big POS 4x4s. spewing out gobs of diesel with the cats removed or whatever the hell diesels use for emissions... when I'm around idiots like that, I don't need to drive fast, I just cruise along and shock the hell out of them around turns.
I enjoy surprising people by making turns without breaking and by coming to almost a stop with engine braking and using the brakes only at the last few feet. that throws a lot of people off and they don't know what the hell is going on. I'm sure they think I have bad brake light to till I break it the last second. That's fun. in general it's fun screwing with commuters....
I can relate to what Aeneas137 is saying. I live in a rural county of 35000 people and the jacked up 4x4 is the king of transportation here with diesels being a high percentage of these vehicles .I personally dig handling over high speed capabilities of a car. There's nothing like the low speed oversteer in my car with the right curve and throttle position.
I'm on the opposite side - often. If I take mine for a ride the car usually suborns me to drive it fast. Unfortunatly we have extremely severe traffic laws in Switzerland. Perhaps I'm still not mature enough (despite born in the 70's) but I have to let the
PDK
in auto if I want to drive calmly.
But if I change to manual, the car instigates me to drive it fast. Turn sport mode on and I'm lost and have a blast! Perhaps that's why I don't even consider buying/driving a motorcycle....
My decision to retrofit the PSE was also because I wanted to have fun without having to fully stand on the gas/brake all the time. It worked partially
Hi SwissCayman. I drove MT equipped cars just about all my adult life with just a couple of autos thrown in over the 50+ years. This
PDK
is the best of both worlds and it seems like it has telepathic properties sometimes. The roads I drive are generally like driving flat track instead of up/down curvey things. 280ASL is where I live. And the Porsche is a good substitute for a bike.
