My OEM key fob was badly worn out. Purchased new fob shell from eBay for $12. Excellent quality, very satisfied. For about 10 minutes moved all the electronics to the new fob. Now the car locks and unlocks but does not start. Do I need to take it to the dealer for reprogramming or I can do it by myself? The spare key works fine. I just cannot believe this needs to be reprogrammed after each battery replacement.
Any ideas? I did quite a bit of research but didn't come up with anything useful.
Thanks!
Do you mean the white part of my picture?

Sounds like you forgot to swap the "pill" from the old key head.
Problem solved!
Thank you to berty987 and his article

My mistake was not paying attention and removing the graphite sealed transponder from the old fob. This transponder contains the vehicle specific code which the receiver reads to disable the immobilizer. The transponder is glued to the key and it took me about 45 minutes to remove it without damaging it. Once installed in the new fob, the car starts, locks unlocks and everything functions properly.
Cost $12 bucks+10 min. to transfer electronics + 45 min. to transfer the transponder + 2 hours researching the forums like crazy = new key!
Very happy!
Best!
You are correct. Live and learn. I was wondering what was that and thought it is some kind of radio interference shield. Obviously wrong. The funny thing is when I realized what it is I put it in my pocked, got the new key and went to the car. It started immediately. I bet you it doesn't take much to read this code from the transponder and replicate it to as many "pills" as you called it as you want. Will research further.
I did the same thing on my first one.
The RFID transponder is easy to miss, since it blends with the socket and black plastic on the interior of the key.
I love those $12-15 ebau keys though. Had to get another one, as one of the alarm buttons popped out. Now I am flush with spare parts.
So much better than $450 OEM.
The real question is why the transponder is glued into the case. There is no technical reason whatsoever why it could not be mounted on the main PCB. If it was mounted on the main board, transferring the parts takes 5 minutes and you can teach your dog to do it. When glued into the case it makes it much more difficult and risky to break the transponder. So why is it there? The answer? $400 to the dealer and several hours of your time. There you go!
