Hi all,
My
numeric shifter
is coming this week. I’ve only got the shifter at the minute and not the cables. Is anyone else running the standard cables? And if So did you still notice an increase in feel?
If needed I will order the cables, but the extra vibration and noise did put me off.
Thanks
Simon
Numeric
`cables made a big difference.Get them.
I don't have either. Only using the
gt4
shifter at the moment. But yea, from what I've heard the cables are what really elevate that mod to the
next
level. Sorry. Don't mean to spend more of your money for you
I only upgraded the shifter as the previous owner had already installed the revised OEM cable and bracket and I wanted to avoid the NVH increase that some users report from the
Numeric cables
. The
Numeric shifter
kit is necessary IMO for these cars.
Synthedup; I would quickly order the
Numeric cables
as well. This system really gets you into the mechanical action of up shifting and motor braking on the downshift, I have had this system for 40k miles without any issues. What this system has done for me is allow downshifting at any oppertunity, The proof is my brakes are still at 40% after the 40k miles. This system then allows more oil to be injected on the walls of the cylinder on downshifting. This additional oil cools the walls and piston skirts which is important to keep the bore scoring at bay.
The
next
step is a Wavetrac LSD. This step adds much more balance to the rear end both in throttle from apex and motor braking in trail braking. Keep the rear end from stepping out under both.
The cables helped a bit with feel but a lot more with me not being worried about them breaking - that's the bigger issue with the stock cables. You can probably get the same improvement in feel just by using more rigid cable ends with the stock cables, but the left cable will still likely break.
The NVH increase is minimal if you use the silicone hose wraps, though I also had to do some foam addition on the interior to get rid of the last of the noise. If you're going through the hassle of removing the center console to do the shifter I'd just do them both.
If you want an improvement in feel this was one of the bigger things I found:
Cayman Shifter Linkage Mod
Hello all, I'm excited to have joined the Planet-9 forum. It's been a great resource for my 2008 987 Cayman DE1. I figured I would make my first post a source rather than a request. I have seen many posts discussing shifter play and improvements. I noticed some room for improvement in the...

thank you for this thread. I had been debating getting a RD short shifter and shift-right kit, versus the
numeric
, and appreciate the advice here. I will get the
numeric
and the cables. it looks like a beautiful piece.
Aeneas137, 4 years using the
Numeric shifter
and steel cables without an issue. I do like engine braking so it gets used both ways a lot. You might be interested in a Wavetrac LSD with a lifetime warranty, unlike the clutch style types. The wave slider does not lock up as tight as the clutch LSD, but that actually may be a good thing as it may prevent snap oversteer from the apex. The other benefit is the opposite on threshold braking. It does stabilize the rear end but not as much as some clutch styles do depending on the clutch ramps used. I have never had the rear end wobble under threshold or trail braking due to the stability of Wavetrac and Tarett Race LCA's solid thrust puck bearing.
In my opinion, although the
Numeric shifter
is very nice, it is only part of the solution. The cables are another part. And unfortunately, the shifter levers back at your tranny are the 3rd part. You can install the shifter and see what you think but since taking the console apart is a big part of the job, I would wait and do the cables at the same time. The levers at the tranny are a last resort. There was a post (here or on ********) recently where someone refurbed the one on the drivers side, with the tranny in the car. I'm not that limber but apparantly it can be done.
You might be interested in this video I did. The point is that the shifter does very little to control the "preciseness" of the shift pattern. In math terms, it is a second order effect.
thanks for the video. You're right, that is interesting. Mine is very spongy, easy to mis-shift. I will be doing the numeric and cables at the same time.
looks like Wavetrac is available for most car makes incl 350Z. I have a Nismo LSD and JWT clutch and it's very precise. eventually a new LSD and clutch are in my
Cayman
's future. isn't the factory
987.1
basically an open diff?
