I tried so hard I snapped off their heads and after much anguish I had to drill each one ,using a hand drill !!!!!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have been searching for a 996 roof rack on Google and only get Cayenne related results. :dont know:
I know they were available for this model. Any ideas on where's the best place to buy?
I've thought about getting one myself for the bike + ski's (you can get separate attachments for these) but the price is crazzzy given that the good folks at Porsche want c.£500 for their "
Roof Transport System
" (ouch...).
Unfortunaley they seem to be like rocking horse do-do on ebay.
nb: I still can't work out whether the "Thule" racks that fit onto gutterless Audi TT's won't fit? Anyone know if it does ?
However - the only component carried over from the 996 to the 997 was...the roof. Thus it should be the same part. If you can find someone ordering a new 911 who doesn't want a roof rack but is friendly enough for you to bung a fist full of cash then the price from the options list is only £209...
Just did a quick google and found this:

Tempted to get a towbar and a boat now!
I've been thinking about this myself since I noticed the mounting points on the guttering. My snowboard fits in the car if it's just me but it would maybe be nice to have a rack for those trips to the mountains.
Roof Rack
I managed to buy a genuine porsche roof rack secondhand from an advert in Porsche Post . It fits a treat and I can carry my racing kayak to training events and competitions. I did however have great trouble fitting it in the first instance. My car is 10 years old and had never had a rack fitted before, so when I lifted the flaps on the roof and tried to remove the screws , I found that they were siezed in and would not move. I tried so hard I snapped off their heads and after much anguish I had to drill each one ,using a hand drill !!!!! Took quite a while going very carefully, but in the end I managed it

When I mentioned to the dealer that I wanted to drive to the Alps, he just stared at me blankly.. almost trying to work out if I was joking!
I said "I've seen the Siberian ice testing movie, the car's more than capable".... Again.. nothing.
Parts department might be a better option!
Re: Roof Rack
I bought 2nd hand Porsche racks 2 years ago and have never fitted them yet as the screws in the roof wouldn't budge. Have put off drilling them but it looks like that is what I have to do.
I have to say I have often imagined (but never seen) a 911 with a pair of ski's on it on a roof rack, I think it would look INSANELY good, a la Esprit Turbo in James Bond!!
I also rather like the white "Good Year" lettering on the tyres... I wonder what my Continentals would look like if I get the tipex pen out... probably gash!!
What about a rack or roof bars for a Cab? There is a seam on each side, but no recessed mounting points.
Before anyone takes the piss, it's the hard-top I'm talking about.
well, there's one for the Boxster that is usable with the roof down or up! Would be surprised if the same didn't exist for the good 'ol 911, the eternally usable sportscar
I saw a 996 C4S coupe round canary wharf the other day with the roof transport system. Looked quite cool really
