Suggestion

We had a customer use red on his spin on filter adapter and when we sleeved his block and needed to clean all the passages after machining, we actually had to machine out the filter adapter as heat alone was not allowing the filter adapter to release.

Suggestion

They say you can clean the threads and install the adaptor with some threadlocker if its a continued issue, but lubrication of the new filter rubber seal as Boris mentions is also key, and this is standard practice for any spin on filter on any car

Suggestion

We would recommend replacing the outer larger diameter o-ring on the filter adapter before reinstallation as the o-rings can leak when the adapters are re-installed.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I used the LN Engineering oil filter adapter to convert my 2005 Boxster S to a spin on oil filter instead of the paper filter. Yesterday I was changing the oil and when I removed the oil filter the entire adapter came with it and was very hard to separate the two so I could put it back on and get a fresh filter on. Does this happen often? Did I put the oil filter on too tight? James Reeser 2005 Boxtster S

POST 2Original post

Once you're back to spin on filters, lubricate the seal with fresh oil and hand tighten only.

POST 3Original post

I have one and they mention this in their documentation. Most people over tighten the filter it seems which really only needs hand tightening. They say you can clean the threads and install the adaptor with some threadlocker if its a continued issue, but lubrication of the new filter rubber seal as Boris mentions is also key, and this is standard practice for any spin on filter on any car

POST 4Original post

Sounds like it was on too tight. I’m getting ready to install mine in a couple of weeks. [emoji1696]. I may use some blue loctite ICNU. Shawn in VA (USA)

POST 5Original post

I thought about the loctite when I installed mine, but of course heat is what is used to break the loctite grip, and I'm not sure if normal engine temps will render it useless or not? Red will work, but then you would need a torch to get the adapter off if needed, so I dont think I would go that route😣 There should be some documentation from loctite on the temp ranges their various products have considering there are so many different colors! They even have specific formulas that are resistant to any of the contaminants that may be in the threads such as oil

POST 6Original post

I've been using Mahle OC 1063 filters. They raised the prices. Online search says Wix makes the NAPA gold and Platinum filters. Wix 51348 are still cheap and it looks like it's the same filter with a different label.

POST 7Original post

It has a temperature range of -65 to 360 Degrees F and has a flashpoint greater than 93 degrees Celsius. https://krayden.com/buy/loctite-243-threadlocker-250ml-bottle-lt1329505.html Shawn in VA (USA)

POST 8Original post

I think there is a torque spec. from LN regarding the adapter install. There is a hex on the inside of the adapter for that, near the thread to attach the filter. You may need to remove the threaded nipple to reach it, or a deep well socket. I had one on both my 2001 Boxster S and now the 2015 Boxster S . The only problem I've had was the center filter thread nipple coming off with the filter. I tightened it up with an internal pipe wrench and has been good ever since. I always use clean oil on the gasket and go about a half turn after gasket contact. I wouldn't use Locktite on the adapter to engine.

POST 9Original post

There is a video n Cliff’s Garage about this issue. I would recommend watching it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

POST 10Original post

If you do use Loctite, only use blue and use it sparingly. The adapter should not be backing off the engine block with normal use. We had a customer use red on his spin on filter adapter and when we sleeved his block and needed to clean all the passages after machining, we actually had to machine out the filter adapter as heat alone was not allowing the filter adapter to release.

POST 11Original post

Likely the filter was put on too tight. We rarely see this occur otherwise. You'll need two separate filter/strap wrenches to break the two apart. We would recommend replacing the outer larger diameter o-ring on the filter adapter before reinstallation as the o-rings can leak when the adapters are re-installed. It's the same o-ring as what goes on the factory oil filter housing, so it should be easy to get.

POST 13Original post

Thanks everyone. I always put some clean oil on the gasket and only hand tighten, but maybe I don't know my own strength!

POST 14Original post

engine oil probably never goes above 300F. I think Blue would hold. where it utterly fails is in exhaust bolts because exhaust gas gets quite a bit hotter than that.

POST 15Original post

Both a 987 and a 996 to date, both equipped with LN filter conversions and soon one more. No problems undoing filters after installing .(always hand tightened)
