I was using very little pressure and highish speed, i also used some detailing spray to lube, the stuff used for claying, all in all not the best approach, that said today i was mazed at how good the panels looked in daylight, better than i had expected.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anybody help? I've got a problem with paint swirls (only viewable under garage lights) on the bonnet of my Basalt Black 996 C4S. Tried Autoglymn Super Resin Polish and the Meguairs 3 step process but nothing is shifting it. :help:

POST 2Original post

swirls usually require paint correction: look at elite detailer. sometimes they can be masked using glazes or waxes with microfillers; never tried this so don't know. if you feel brave, get yourself a das-6 and have a go at polishing them out yourself- http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/Kestrel_Products.html?gclid=CKzN4rP15J0CFVtm4wod-HTxMQ use the least abraisive polish you can to remove the swirls. also check your washing technique to make sure you are not putting more swirls onto the paintwork yourself. G, the elite detailer has put a safe-wash guide in the detailing section of the forum. hope that helps

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not sure I'm brave enough for the polishing mate but I'll certainly check out the detailing section. Cheers.

POST 4Original post

I've taken the plunge I read about the DAS 6 and i4Detailing on 911UK a week or so ago. I have bough the meduim hard paint kit, so i will let you all know in a week or so how i get on, any tips for a first time detailer would be most welcome. My C4S is Silver, which i hear is a bit of a difficult colour to get good results on, i also have the Polished Bliss silver polish kit so all in all i should have a chance. Fingers crossed Cheers Paul

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers Paul. Let me know how you get on - I'm loathe to spend any more money on products that don't work so would appreciate hearing what you have learned.

POST 6Original post

Re: I've taken the plunge Good on you for giving it a go, I'd love to myself but would probably get carried away (in a straight jacket of course). Silver is indeed very hard to do well....check out this thread: http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=46268 There is only one Elite Detailer ... :worship:

POST 7Original post

Tried it out today...... Hi All, Had a go with the Das 6 today, spent about 4 hours on the bonnet and front wings and it looks a lot better but nowhere near as good as the pics of the 993. I took it easy and tended to lift the polisher off the paint rather than apply too much pressure. I still have a few scratches in the paint, I will sort some photos out next weekend.. i have the sonos medium paint kit, I am wondering if it is either more time and patience or a more powerful polish required... is silver a particularly hard paint? Thanks Paul

POST 8Original post

Applying pressure is the key to getting the compound to work. Try a relatively low speed on the DAS and quite a bit of pressure. I find that's the best combo.

POST 9Original post

Here are some informative videos to check out if your brave. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=A16B41BD44A1F33C&search_query=meguiars+polishing I`d love to have a crack, but would probably ending up spending more on materials, equipments and fixing my F##k ups than I would on some good paint correction from G. Christmas is coming so treat yourself to the Elite.

POST 10Original post

I would be very very carefull using 'mops' or orbital polishers if you have no bodyshop experience take it to a bodyshop get the car mopped then polish the car using straight lines its very easy to burn through the lacquer on curved body panels, and it certainly doesnt take 4 hours to polish 4 panels

POST 11Original post

I did mine myself as the following thread shows; http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=48304 I found that the porker paint is quite tough and as such needed a cutting pad and megs 83. Then the areas that needed that were finished off with a polishing pad and megs 80. That slapped a nice layer or 2 of wax on it. No swirls under the garage lights or in direct sun light. well worth doing. Jim

POST 12Original post

That's interesting, I'm having my 996 detailed at the moment, and the guy doing it reckons Porsche paint is quite soft compared to other marques. Either way, the lacquer on the passenger rear quarter (between side window and rear window) has been burnt through due to some over-zealous polishing by someone else. I'd advise caution if you are DIY'ing.

POST 13Original post

Thanx I was using very little pressure and highish speed, i also used some detailing spray to lube, the stuff used for claying, all in all not the best approach, that said today i was mazed at how good the panels looked in daylight, better than i had expected. Thanks for the advice, I will try again in the next few weeks, Cheers Paul
