Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

External leaks are easily found by adding a fluorescant dye to the coolant, and using an ultra-violet lamp to detect the bright yellow leak point!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had the AA out they did a presure test up to 5 PSI and it held, car the car is using water about 2 pints every 10 miles, no water in oil as far as I can see? Any tips?

POST 2Original post

You are losing water and do not have any telltale white scum on the oil filler cap? ...right? then the three usual areas to look into are: 1) The little pipe that runs L > R just ahead of the engine(front) it rubs against the undertray and leaks(slowly when cold then faster when hot) 2) "Sweating" on both or one front rads(not always seen with a pressure test) 3) Water header plastic tank(this usually shows under pressure) so look into 1 and 2 first

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ok ill try that, it does appear to leak faster when under stress. I am concerned that it may be a head gasket but as you said no white scum in the oil on the dip stick, and only a tiny bit in the filler cap, that is there more than likely because of damp.

POST 4Original post

Any half decent workshop would have a pressure tester, which can tell if the leak is internal or external. Either way, you have a leak. Pay the nice man to tell you exactly where it's from. External leaks are easily found by adding a fluorescant dye to the coolant, and using an ultra-violet lamp to detect the bright yellow leak point! Internal leaks can be detected by the C0/C02 in the coolant header tank. Why mess around?

POST 5Original post

Not wishing to scare you but after the ten miles is the cooling system unduly pressurised. ie does the water shoot out when the cap is removed. Also when starting from cold is there any steam from the exhaust and if so is it from one bank (pipe) rather than the other. I only ask as I had a similar set of water loss circumstances . Again no oil in water or water in oil to naked eye.But pressurised system and more steam from left hand bank. and no visible leaks. Suspected possible cracked cylinder head or fractured liner. Eventually fitted a new engine as something else failed first! Hope its just a leaky pipe/rad/header tank.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thats my fear, I am holding out for a leaky pipe though, the mechanic is looking into it. Fingers crossed.
