For US versions of Porsches the model year has been known to be started earlier, but due to US Federal regulations Porsche introduced option M718 to declare that the VIN model year had been changed from the previous model year to the next.
Leading evidence: 'Replace from the previous model year' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'most out-spoken person myself' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace from the previous model year' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The new 4-door sedan may well have type number 989 which was used for the original 4-door prototype in 1989.

I am probably the most out-spoken person myself with my hard-headiness but on this forum I hold out.

Suggestion
Nothing with Porsche is easy to work out and it changes with each series as well.

Suggestion
I do not know if option M718 was ever used on the 996 series for the US versions.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Man there has been a lot of flaming the last few days on Rennlist between fuels, engine failures, and such. Lets gain our composure, I thought this was an adult forum and I am having my doubts (I am probably one of the youngest at 28). I left flat-6 because of this. I am probably the most out-spoken person myself with my hard-headiness but on this forum I hold out. I have read a ton of people belittling each other claiming they know more than someone else, I have received several.
What happened?
Anyways, I have owned my 996 for over a year and a half and there is a burning question in my mind, what in the hell does MY mean? I have tryed to figure it out over time but I have not been able to figure it out.
Just trying to bring some love back to Rennlist, peace in the middle east
SCREW YOU!!!! Frickin' idiot!!! If you don't know what MY means, you don't belong on this board. Go join the rose gardener's board or something more appropriate for your knowledge of automotive jargon.
Sorry, I don't mean that. I just couldn't resist the opportunity to be a smart-*** and counter your "can't we all just get along" message.
I knew MY = model year but never knew why some people would state "I have a MY02 carrera..." Wouldn't someone naturally think a 2002 WOULD be the model year?
Tippy - I agree with you to a certain extent. I guess that when you have a bunch of guys (and gals) that get together to talk cars, you will almost always have some bickering back and forth. I just take most of this with a grain of salt and let it slide.
While there are VERY FEW people here that are intentionally malicious, there are times when the debates get heated and, unfortunately, degrade to a personal attack mode. I guess it is easy to call someone an idiot when you are not looking him or her square in the eye. That is one of the reasons I like to throw out some humor in a few of my posts. It seems to take the edge off the situation somewhat in some of these little battles for supremacy. When the battle seems destined to continue, I will offer free popcorn and sometimes free drinks so the rest of can have something to munch on while we sit back and watch the battle.
BTW - The moderators on the Forum keep a pretty close eye on this type of thing. If someone continues to remain in "attack" mode, they are given a "vacation" from the Forum. In the 18 months I have been involved with Rennlist there have been 6 - 8 guys that were sent out on "vacation" (temporarily banned). One guy came back from "vacation" and cleaned up his act for a while, but about a month later, he reverted back to his old nasty habits. He is now
Permanently Banned
from Rennlist.
Hang in there and enjoy the Forum. The benefits far outweigh the negatives.
I'm glad you brought up the 'MY' code (though I was able to figure that one out on my own some years back), because it reminds me to inquire as to the 'Mk' designation. I think I get that MkI stands for the 1st iteration of the 996 (1999-2001) while MkII stands for the second iteration of the 996 (2002+). Is this correct? If so, what does 'Mk' stand for?
(PS - I'm an idiot for even wondering this, but it's nagged me for ages)
Edward,
Mk (MK) stands for Mark. Often it is added unofficially like in the case of the GT-3 to differentiate between two distinct models, but Porsche do not use this form of designation. They use Type numbers.
It's very English to Mark things. Spitfire MkI to XXIV (Mk1 to 24). You can use Roman numerals or numbers. The Ford GTs were known as MkI, MkII, MkIIA, MkIIB, MkIII and the MkIV (originally known as the J-car).
Ciao,
Adrian.
Don't laugh on the dates because the original plan for both the 993 and the 996 was to launch them in September the ninth month of 1993 and 1996. The 993 went into production in September 1993, but the 996 did not go into production until September 1997.
The Auftragnummer 993 was actually selected in 1989.
All the rest like 928, 944, 914 etc also had a meaning when Porsche Engineering were going through the available Project numbers in the 9XX series. They were NOT picked sequentially as a lot of people like to believe and sometimes the original 9XX Project number was changed to a different 9XX series for the actual type.
A project number ending in a 5 meant that the basic product was designed or was to be manufactured outside of Porsche. This was the plan, but it went wobbly a couple of times.
Project numbers are also recycled. The new 4-door sedan may well have type number 989 which was used for the original 4-door prototype in 1989.
Ciao,
Adrian.
The point is; there is NO logical number picking system.
Project and type numbers were picked by Porsche Engineering, Marketing or the big boss to suit their needs out of the group of numbers that were available at the time.
Ciao,
Adrian.
Of all the threads on this forum, this has got to be the most ridiculous...
Come on...MY clearly establishes the year of the car (e.g., MY 02) is a "Model Year 2002." We all know that the MY and the CY ("Calendar Year") don't always coincide. For instance, how many of us by new cars on 12/31 that are considered the following year models?
Is this thread for real???
Are you insulting Tippy?!?! That's SO insensitive of you.
Go sit in the corner for 10 minutes.
Anyone know what KMA means? People are always saying that to me.
Model year is not the same as a calendar year.
The normal ROW (rest of the world) Porsche model year runs from August 1st to July 31st. So a MY02 ROW Porsche would have been built between August 1st 2001 and July 31st 2002, September actually because they are usually on holiday for most of August, but officially its August to July.
For US versions of Porsches the model year has been known to be started earlier, but due to US Federal regulations Porsche introduced option M718 to declare that the VIN model year had been changed from the previous model year to the next.
Option M718 was first introduced in model year 1992 to declare the first batch of 964 RS Americas as 1993 models even though the were built in model year 1992.
Nothing with Porsche is easy to work out and it changes with each series as well. I do not know if option M718 was ever used on the 996 series for the US versions. It was for the first batch of 993s sent to the USA.
Ciao,
Adrian.
damn...PL you really think the cab will make me loose my hair??? didn't think of that!!!
Because then I am going to be old, fat ugly AND bold!!! I am going to get a hardtop and will never take it off again....
I also think that we don't need to group hug......let's not get to close!!! all those big bellies together!! might cause a landslide!!!!
nicolaas - yes, driving a Cab with the top down will blow the hair right off your scalp!
BTW - BALD = no hair, hairless.... BOLD = courageous, daring, dauntless
I never knew that the model designations were named in that manner. Is it a good thing or a bad thing that the engineers seemed to have OCD?
As for the rough threads lately I had the joy of writing in one and I felt it was easier to let go than continue the discussion. After a certain point the discussion came back around and started all over again. Since I am new to forums and not used to the BS that is common in forums I thought that I could have a reasonable discussion but I guess not. I'm not interested in getting into conflict with people over things that really do not have any significance. But man, people say stupid sh?t sometimes.
If you read my post I'm not saying stupid poeple it's stupid comments and it wasn't directed to you or anyone in particular. People say stupid things. And if you really want to know the discussion we had was legitimate and you were the only one that gave me an answer. "Others" kept on repeating the same thing without further explination. Then the thread just started to repeat the same comments or theories without adding to the discussion. At that point it bacame pointless in furthering the thread.
So like I said before it was not directed to anyone in particular. And I've never taken the high road and don't plan on it either.
I have a coffee cup with "WTF?" on it. No, not everyone know what it means. Take the rest of the world outside the US. I get asked about it by our international employees when they come over. I have to explain it so they understand why I point every now and then in meetings.
