and it was one of the solenoids...the stalling was caused by the cam timing being out on the one bank with the faulty solenoid as well, so sounds like 2 problems.........sorry.
Leading evidence: 'cam timing being out' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cam timing being out' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check car stalled' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

My old 996 had the same problem....when it was checked the car stalled.

Usually just the solenoid can be replaced which is considerably cheaper than the whole unit but the job may grow it any of the exhaust system is a problem to remove, particularly the manifold to head bolts.

I agree - definately get it looked fixed and one of the testers which enables you to turn off the solenoids is the way forward (under the drive links active menu) but I suspect the indy has done this already during his diagnosis.

Suggestion
If it's an early mechanical throttle car, then Lloyd's suggestion of checking the idle control valve is a good one.

Bearing in mind the repair would cost around £1200 I am thinking of living with it, it has been like it on and off for a few years and doesnt really cause me a problem, stalls every now and then.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been advised by a local indy that I have a faulty Variocam unit on one bank. I think this is an intermittent problem as I believe it sticks sometimes causing a lumpy idle. Give the car a bit of a thrashing and it seems to be OK for a while
Bearing in mind the repair would cost around £1200 I am thinking of living with it, it has been like it on and off for a few years and doesnt really cause me a problem, stalls every now and then.
Anyone else had similar issues?
I would just get it sorted out as you never know what else it could be causing to slowly go wrong.. I guess it's up to you though i'm more of a person that likes stuff fixed instead of living with it..
I too would sort it. Like Atomicveilside mentioned, you don't know what other adverse affects this could be having & i'd also want my 996 performing to it's full potential.
Just my opinion - Hope it helps :thumb:
Hopefully Richard H or Grant at Hartech can confirm this but I didn't think a variocam fault could make the car stall?
I would have thought maybe idle control valve sticking.
No, but it will cause a lumpy idle.
If it is the solenoid, I would have thought it should cost a lot less than that.
What model and year? If it's an early mechanical throttle car, then Lloyd's suggestion of checking the idle control valve is a good one.
sounds like its one of the solenoids (one on each bank), get the indy to test activate these whilst wired up to the PWIS tester to be sure.
@lloyd6 activating the solenoid at idle wll cause the car to stall BTW.
Lumpy idle and flat spot could also be MAF, coil backs or as said before carbon build up in the plenum
Had a solenoid go on mine a while back and the mechanic tried adjusting
both with the PWIS while the car was idling to see if there was any effect.
Thats how he diagnosed one of them wasn't working but the car didn't stall,
the RPM altered slightly.

Hi
I agree - definately get it looked fixed and one of the testers which enables you to turn off the solenoids is the way forward (under the drive links active menu) but I suspect the indy has done this already during his diagnosis. (We have had the odd occassion where the solenoids were ok but there was a wiring problem so worth checking that first). There's also a good chance a DME fault will be stored. Usually just the solenoid can be replaced which is considerably cheaper than the whole unit but the job may grow it any of the exhaust system is a problem to remove, particularly the manifold to head bolts.
The idle can be affected if its stuck in the wrong position.

HELP!!!!,
Sorry to resurrect an old post but I now may have a similar problem.
Went in for a 12k service today and the Indy got a fault code on the diagnostics relating to the variocam not functioning on bank 1
I haven't really noticed any problems with the car although I haven't really had a chance to open her up yet & fully use the variocam.
I'm told that possibly the solenoid &\or the tensioner may need replacing. Awaiting a little further diagnostics until he says for sure.
I'm told this is a big job (16 hours labour approx) to rectify.
Gutted, but I guess bills like this will occur from time to time?
Any advice or experiences would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Adam

Re: Variocam
Thanks, so did you have to have the tensioner & the solonoid replaced?
Do you remember roughly how much this cost?
From what I understand, it the tensioner that's the expensive part along with taking a good few hours labour to replace?
