Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

As part of replacing my service cup frame, I need to drain down the coolant past the neck of the coolant filler tube. I had thought that I might be able to do this with just a turkey baster, but given what I've been reading about needing to bleed the cooling system I'm a bit more concerned. Anyone know what the "turning point" is? I can't imagine the filler hose holds more than a cup or so of coolant, but I could be wrong…

POST 2Original post

Bill for what my opinion is worth you should be able to do this since you won't be taking the level down to the engine and all the radiator plumbing. IE it's all up high so you shouldn't be draining down to where all the air traps are. Keep in mind I haven't done this. However, don't expect a cup. there will be rather more I suspect. If you look at the attached photo the large hose indicated goes between the actual coolant tank and the filler port at the service door. The little hose above it is the overflow that comes in near the top of the service door. The blue cap indicated by the second arrow is a plain old radiator pressure cap with the coolant tank below it. I would recommend checking it when cold, which takes quite a while, overnight at least, several times just to make sure. The things seem to use a pint or two even when vacuum filled. I don't think you will but better safe... And yes I know that I really need to spend some time learning Photoshop, Sigh.
