Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The only exception was the 996 Anniversary model which had a chrome '911' badge on the rear and was fitted with the X51 pack as standard.
Leading evidence: 'Install with the x51 pack as standard' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install with the x51 pack as standard' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think you probably mean the X51 powerkit? The only 'S' model in the 996 range was the C4S, which did not come with any extra power upgrades (same 3.6L engine as the rest of the range).
I'm sure GT4 will be along soon to extol the virtues of the X51 upgrade, but suffice to say there were several internal modifications to the engine. It wasn't just an air filter/exhaust/remap job. Original cost of the option was something like £8.5K I believe (so there aren't too many around!)
Are you talking about the Carrera 4S? This is the only S version available on the naturally aspirated (NA) cars. There is no increase in power (its the same 320bhp 3.6L engine found in all the non-performance 996 models* (ie Carerra, Cab & Targa).
There was an option to have a factory powerkit fitted to the NA cars by means of the X51 option which had a few additions over the other cars which resulted in a 25bhp increase. This was available on all the non-performance models and from the outside there was no telling which had this and which hadn't (therefore no special badging to denote this). The only exception was the 996 Anniversary model which had a chrome '911' badge on the rear and was fitted with the X51 pack as standard.
Hope this clears things up for you.

* The performance models are otherwise the GT3, GT3RS, Turbo, Turbo S, Turbo/S cab and GT2.
the Carrera 4S was the only naturally aspirated (ie non turbo) S model in the 996 range. It has no more power than the normal 996 but carries considerable extra weight.
It does however look great and benefits from Turbo suspension and brakes
I see, I was talking about the C4s but I also noticed in my 996 targa owners manual that there was a mention of a 'tuned version' engine which was +25 BHP, it's in a section near the back where performance/acceleration tables and graphs are included, thanks
There is one external give away to 996.1 X51 - the central third radiator.
This is not fool-proof as the Tiptronic model also has this and it can be retrofitted on its own. However, a manual car with central rad would solicit further inspection. Additionally, any "X51" 996.1 without central rads has some explaining to do!
Technically a glance at the underside of the engine will also show the different oil pump and additional lubrication lines. Other differences are internal, or in the case of the cast alloy intake (rather than black plastic), require access to the engine bay via the rear lid.
Note: the 996.2 (facelift X51 with Turbo derived front PU) will not have a third rad as cooling was deemed sufficient.
Below 996.1 spec (slightly different on 996.2) @ £8,725 factory fitted.
