Since my Cayman was new (a little over a year ago), I've always felt that there was a bit of excessive resistance, or perhaps a slight binding, in the shift linkage. It was worse when pulling the shift lever down for second, fourth, or sixth gears. I was told it would improve over time with break-in, but it really didn't. Then something rather unexpected happened this past weekend.
I installed the Softronic plenum, which involves moving one of the shift cables over to one side of the plenum to obtain clearance for installation. When I went to test drive the car, I noticed immediately that the resistance in the shifting had disappeared and it was significantly smoother! It had to be something to do with moving the shift cable. What could have changed to cause this apparent improvement? I like the result, but would like to know why it happened.
care to show a picture of this move? I have the same feel in my shifter that you speak of prior to the plenum install
Go to the SRP installation article:
Softronic Plenum Install - My Articles
. At step 15, one of the shift cables is moved to the side of the plenum, and you can see this in the photo above it. Further up the article, you'll see a photo of the arrangement of the shift cables before the move. It isn't much of a change, but it appears to have done something in my case.
Hi Jake,
Very nice article! I have had occasional issues with 3>2 downshifts being balky or notchy. A couple of times it seemed like there was just no gate to enter. I have suspected it was a shift cable adjustment issue, so I am very interested in your experience here.
Please keep us posted...
Ummmmmm, when I moved the cables to install the plenum, the next thing I got was NO GEARS. Because I had moved the left hand cable (which is forward/back movement) One of the ball/socket joints on the gearbox decided that it didn't like it and although when you push it back on it feels quite solid, when I'd finished and after "testing" still jacked up. When I lowered the car and tried for 2nd gear it immediately came off again. I’ve since moved the orientation of the cable to the ball and socked end and also tie wrapped the outer near to the gearbox to stop any movement and, touch wood, it's been ok. But it’s not nice in the middle of nowhere being stuck in 2nd gear, believe me
Allan,
Is this accessable without a ramp? The same has happend to me and I don't know how to re-attache the cable.
Cheers
Chris
Chris you can do it on a jack, just put something under the car "just in case"
Thanks,
Managed it fine this morning. It was the clip at the top, the one below the MAF assembly. Got to it easily from the Engine bay.
Cheers
