Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

Suggestion
Why would you slap a S on the rear deck but not bother to change the door sills?
Leading evidence: 'Replace door sills' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace door sills' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
The surest way is the brake calipers although I suppose even those could be painted or replaced with the red ones.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have attempted to find a definitive answer through the awesome world of the internet but actually reasonably difficult to find.
But what I have found is that it appears that the 991 S is not wider than the base.
The only visible difference is the S badge?
Accurate?
No, there are at least three immediate tell tale signs.
1. S cars have the Big Red brakes. Base cars the black brakes.
2. S cars have dual, dual outlet exhaust tips. Base cars have dual, single outlet exhaust tips
3. S cars have run 245/35 and 295 or 305/30 rears, Base cars run 235/40 and 285/35 rears.
The big red brakes and dual, dual exhaust tips are hard to miss.
The tires sizes are more subtle and you only notice them if you know what you are looking for.
Hope this helps.
The base
911
can be ordered with Sports
Exhaust
which gives the dual pipes. You can also get the 20" S wheels as an upgrade to the base.
The surest way is the brake calipers although I suppose even those could be painted or replaced with the red ones.
It can be painted but rotors and calipers are still smaller. Those who care (
Porsche
enthusiast) can tell easily, your normal Joe doesn't even know what a 'S' model is.
One of the visual differences between base and S does not exist on all cars. PAG allows you to order cars debadged. They still say "
Porsche
" on the hatch, but they do not say "
Cayman
" or "
Cayman S
." Debadged cars of course still have the other differences. As has been said above, the average person can't tell the difference.
Porsche
people instantly look for what for us is the obvious: the double
exhaust
and red brake calipers to identify the S, also mentioned above.
Tough crowd. Wow, someone is going to paint their black brakes red to look like an S car? Seriously?
Yes, you can spec 20" wheels and
PSE
.
Yes, I'm sure some company will be glad to sell you the big reds. Now you are getting way beyond simply debadging the car.
The other tell tales are:
. As ynot said, the front rotors are larger
. base car does not come with
PTV
, S does (although that is not an external sign)
. base car does not come with
PASM
, S does (although you can spec it)
. base car says "
carrera
" on the door sills, S says "
Carrera
S" (although someone can certainly buy the part and switch it).
might as well paint em yellow and claim you have ceramics!
Here's a base 4 that someone put dual exhausts on and a 4s badge on, and is advertising as a 4s.
2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, $84,987 - Cars.com
Something is wrong here. The vin doesn't decode correctly.
Another telltale sign is that on the MFD
CARRERA
4 will be on the startup screen, not
Carrera
4 S.
This is a dealer too. Something not right at all.
Price also down $5K
looks like it decodes to a
carrera
4 with 20" S wheels, but no
pse
(confirmed by lack of
pse
button in interior pix), so someone must've added the dual
exhaust
aftermarket, along with the badge.

There are VIN decoders around. Such as
Scousers
People keep claiming this, but it's just not true. The interiors are identical. One difference that has not been mentioned: the
Carrera
comes with lighter, better-performing 19" rims, vs the
Carrera
S's standard 20" wagon wheels...and both sizes are the same width. The mentioned
Carrera
"upgrade" to 20" wheels is actually a performance downgrade, but if you're a form-over-function type, then yes, you can order the S's 20s on your
