I need some help with this one:
My 2010 Cayman S is about to run out of factory warranty so I'd really like to fix this while Porsche is paying for it.
During spirited driving or track days, the PSM chimes like its being turned off or on. Sometimes it's accompanied by the flashing traction control light on the dash but not always.
It gets progressively worse as the tires lose traction. To induce it for tests, i simply over-inflated the tires. Check out the video. Keep in mind, it doesn't throw any codes. It can also be induced by snap steering at slow speeds 2-5mph. Here's the really weird part, the beep is sometimes delayed from the input or g's that triggered it. Correct me if i'm wrong, but the psm shouldn't be making any chime noises unless you push the button to engage it or disengage it. It happens whether the psm is on or off. #stumped
If PSM is intervening on your behalf, such as when you get wheel spin on one rear wheel, it will beep at you, and usually throws the traction control light as well, but not always depending upon the duration of the loss of traction. My car used to do this stock in tight corners because I was getting wheel slip because the car didn't come with a limited slip differential. Once I installed the TBD (Quaife) the problem went away. Have your dealer check it out to see if it is too sensitive or something, but sounds normal for whenever you are losing grip or PSM is kicking in on your behalf.
Im having them recalibrate the steering sensor... and then shopping for a Guard locker. Thanks
Hopefully that will cure the problem for you. Excuse my ignorance but what is a Guard Locker?
Its a limited slip differential

Thanks for that. Its not a brand I'm familiar with over here in the UK, but it looks a good unit.
Actually, after talking to Guard yesterday, im leaning toward their TBD instead... i only get a few track days a year. It should serve me fine with less maintenance than an LSD.
Update: I replaced the 3-year old battery to make sure the voltage was up to spec. I also had the dealership perform a steering sensor recalibration after reading about it on a racing blog. After driving it hard for a week with bald tires... i couldn't get the errant chime to trigger. Success! To fully compliment fix, i installed new tires and a guard tbd. Wow. Combined with my new FVD headers and sport exhaust, the car has come alive. Next week comes the intake and plenum... and an FVD tune. The sound, the viseral experience of driving this car is beyond exciting. Im enjoying the hell out of my 6 year old Porsche.
