I ran muffler bypass pipes for my last event and they were great (sounded like a real race car should)!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

http://www.mkexhaust.com/products/996_muffler.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8HJ3...os=xXNYE8HZbfk Unfortunately it's pouring down rain and is expected to continue until Monday. Luckily I'm off Monday so hopefully I can install them... I'l guess I'll have plenty of time to take a few pics and perhaps a vid. Stay tuned.

POST 2Original post

sounds good; how are they comparable in design / price / quality to the other brands out there? now get them installed and drive.... don't forget pics and vid...

POST 3Original post

HA, when my GT3 sway bars and links came I installed them in my driveway while it poured!!! Rain is NO EXCUSE !!

POST 4Original post

sweet! I'm now very jealous! Joe from Fabspeed emailed me today and delayed another week. ... :-( but I do have faith in them, my brother and dad know him.. so I'm confidant they will pull through! :-)

This is not one of those rainy-day Seattle drizzles - we're takling the remnants of hurricane Alex. Besides, I start to melt if I get wet...

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 7706335

???? if I dont get wet I start to shrink and dry out and crack... I once went to the midwest for 2 weeks and came back 14 inches shorter!!! A good rain and I popped buck up to normal height though

POST 7Original post

interesting design............ wonder how light it is.

POST 9Original post

I take it your not on because you just finished installing and are now taking a video to share? :-)

POST 10Original post

No update? The only excuse is "The Godfather" of muffler install videos.

POST 11Original post

Man, I love the sound of those M&K's! First saw that video about a year ago and was impressed... I dont hear people talk about them much here. Do let us know what you think and post your own video!

Sorry it's taking so long for the update. I didn't take any pics or vid of the install because of the weather - the humidity kept fogging up the lenses and the mosquitoes were eating me alive. It seems like it'll never stop raining. The mufflers themselves are well built and much smaller than I expected. In fact, they only use one half of the OEM mount. All TIG welded 321 stainless steel, unpolished and fit perfectly. I didn't put them on a scale but they felt about half the weight of the OEMs. The design is a straight-thru similar to the Afterhours and the Jubily. (Pic of Jubily - http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/j...5-p-16132.html ) M&K welded a plate across the two cylinders so it gives the appearance of it as one large chamber, but really it's two separate chambers in a flow-thru design. That surprised me when I examined them because I was expecting a baffled single chamber based on the pics on their web site. Pics from other angles would have been more descriptive. I do plan on making a vid to post, but in the meantime I will briefly describe the sound: at idle the tone is very deep, rev the engine and it makes a little burble as the revs come down. Inside the car it is much louder than stock, especially below 2500 rpm, but above that it's actually very tasteful and the tone is everything I'd hoped for. Actually it sounds magnificent when accelerating. But - driving style makes a huge difference in sound. Freeway, road trip type driving I have no complaints, only compliments. The sound and volume are perfect. Stop-and-go driving around town is a different story. With the engine pulling in the lower rpms, like pulling away from a light or stop sign, the exhaust note is very loud and bassy. I haven't decided whether I like that yet. I have no idea how loud it is outside the car since I'm the only one who drives it, but you should hear it going under the overpasses! On a optimistic note - it does pass the wife-o-meter test: she says she likes it and doesn't find it too loud or annoying, even pulling away from a stop. Maybe she just really loves me. I'm going to live with it for a while and see how I like it. One thing is for certain: with this exhaust everyone will know you drive a Porsche and it is everything they've always imagined it to be. I will post video, in-car and out, if it ever stops raining and I figure out how to attach my video camera inside the car. I have a mount that attaches to the headrest posts (I bought it when I had the MINI) only the 996 doesn't have headrest posts. I'll figure out something. To be continued...

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's a pic of the back of the muffler showing the single attachment point. You'll also notice the flare where the tip attaches is a bit different than the OEM flare (which has a rolled edge). The M&K camp with a FelPro gasket ring that fits in the joint - I reused the OEM clamp. The sleeve that attaches to the cat pipe is provided without clamps, so I had to make a run to the parts store for those since the OEM sleeve/clamp diameter was too small to fit.

POST 14Original post

I was really considering these as well or FVD hmmmm... decisions decisions.

POST 15Original post

Thanks for the detailed write up. Glad to hear you got them installed. As I said, I do love the sound on that video! But now hearing your report I am wondering if they might be too loud for me at the low rev range. Do you get any droning at all? Look forward to your video!

aren't these $1300, why wouldn't you just get the fisters done for $200++ , whats the big difference, they sound pretty close to the same don't they, just wonderin, i haven't done either yet, just tryin to see what's the best option, can anybody tell me.

POST 17Original post

What! for that amount of $$, I'd rather try Cargraphics, if it's about losing a few lbs, then don't get FisterD's, even though they sound great at every rpm range.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Haven't heard any of the other manufacturer's offerings, including FDs, so I can't compare. I do plan on FD'n my OEM mufflers that I removed. I still haven't made a video yet - but I intend to, and that's what's important . But I will say this: after living with the M&Ks for awhile I've decided I love the sound, even though at times I would prefer they were a bit quieter, specifically when I'm driving a lot of stop-and-go at low speeds where the engine speed goes below 2500 rpm frequently. It can be somewhat intense. The sound is best described as a "deep rumble" and really turns heads at the weekend car meet in the parking lot of Otto's BBQ. Yes, some would probably describe it as a resonance and indeed it is, but it is not the sort of constant resonance that drives one nuts and delivers a splitting headache, it's just a transitory pressure felt when shifting and the rpms dip down to 2000, then fades out around 2800. At highway cruising speeds they purr mercilessly and when accellerating up to speed - WOW!

POST 19Original post

+1, if you are enjoying them, that's all that matters, and you give yourself an option for the FD's when the time comes.

POST 21Original post

expected delivery from fedex for my fabspeed supercups is the 20th! woo hoo! :-)

POST 22Original post

A little loud for my tastes, but MAN do I like how it sounds. REALLY nice!

POST 24Original post

who is the liar that posted on here removing the mufflers is a 20 min job per side? LMAO... took me forever! I feel like the studs in the first pic were put in backwards... because there was no room to remove them... I had to unbolt from the motor brackets.. 1 click of the wrench at a time.... took it for a spin around the block with them off... fun! now to wait for my fabspeeds.... the worst part is that they arrive monday.... same day my driveway is being replaced.. i cant drive on it for 48 hours... so the car has to sit in the garage with the new exhaust for 2 days before I get to test it out.. argh!

That's because those bolts stay in until the muffler is removed. You only remove the three that bolt to the fender (and the clamp that attaches to the cat pipe, and the tips) and the whole thing comes out as an assembly. Don't feel bad though - I tried to do the same thing.

POST 26Original post

ha! apparently I seem to learn everything the hard way.... it was a pain in the a$$! lol.....

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 7742035

First time I tried to take a muffler off I did the same but 1/2 hour in I figured out the other bolts were there...... It's kinda nice to figure it out before taking the whole thing out.

POST 29Original post

remember 3 nuts - NOT 2 bolts if I was in town yesterday I would have popped over with beers to show ya the tricks done yet?

POST 30Original post

yup, all out.. :-) took it for a spin, now waiting for the new ones to arrive!

POST 31Original post

ya drove it w/o mufflers ehhh... what did you think? wanna be running by-pass pipes

POST 32Original post

I liked it. but figure I'd surly get a ticket..... the exhaust I ordered should be a good middle ground. :-)

POST 33Original post

naw, I drove past 2 Bellevue cops with the pipes off and"cracked it open".... their head turned instantly... but I was not breaking the speed limit and they just watched my drive away... it is fun just I think my ears still ring 2 years later

POST 34Original post

Post a video my friend. I like the sound. I have the mk II hack (FDs stage 1) and yours is much louder....

POST 35Original post

I have had the M&K's on my 996 since Nov 09. I love them and they are built like a tank (lot's of compliments on sound from others)! Theere is some droning in the lower rpm's, but just down shift and enjoy! Let me know if you get any chirping or whistling sounds with them as they get broken in. Do you do any track events? I ran muffler bypass pipes for my last event and they were great (sounded like a real race car should)! If you want to speed up the removel process of taking of your exhaust, get an air compressor and use an air ratchet...got those pesky three bolts off in less than 3 mins!
