Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I'm looking for a daily driver. Two choices, both around 35-40k. A '93-95 928 GTS or a 2000-2002 996 Carrera 4. Or something else? What do you think? Thanks as always.

POST 2Original post

I gotta say I love both of your choices!! The 928 GTS goes on my list as one of the truly great Porsches!! The 996 (despite what some of the "figs" believe) is one of the best 911's ever built!! I would say that the 928 will hold it's value better, but as a daily driver can be vary expensive to maintain. The 996 won't hold it's value as well, but will be less expensive to operate and ultimately offers more performance. Additionally, the 928 is a bit more of a "GT" and the 996 a bit more of a "sports car". Both are great!!! Good luck!!

POST 4Original post

928 GTS....if you got the money for maintance....love this Porsche!! Had a 928s YEARS ago...and it is the most comfortable sportscar....160-170MHP on the autobahn..no problems....but it loves fuel!!! 996 isn't as comfy, but is a little less dated as the GTS...

POST 5Original post

Ray S above gives a good brief description of both choices. Having driven 928's for 15 years I love them...but the maintenance and mpg did wear on me. The 928 is built like a tank and no other P car compares. Now daily driving a 996 I love it too. Feels more modern and handles great. All the modern gadgets on a fully optioned car are nice. Better ac than the 928 and the system will actually hold a charge Should really try to stretch your budget to an 02 if possible. Remember the saying, always buy the most current car you can afford.

POST 7Original post

996 - better looks, handling, reliability, and when you spend 40k on a losing investment, it might as well be newer!

POST 8Original post

Oh and by the way, I have had 26 MPG overall per tank severals times in my 996 Tip. About 75% heavy traffic highway and 25% city. Most of the time 22-23 MPG overall.

POST 9Original post

I agree with the 996, mine isn't my daily. However, I would drive it everyday if it didn't rain all the time. A rather shallow way to look at it, is the 996 is more modern looking vehicle with modern options. The 928 is too much of a classic to be driven on a daily basis; cover up and keep in garage IMO. Save the 928 for hot, sunny July days. It all boils down to your preference.....good luck and have fun with the search.

POST 11Original post

996 for me- would like to have a 928 someday to play with however

POST 13Original post

996 all the way...purchase the newest P-Car you can afford...
