Does anyone know if an "adapter kit" for a
987.1
(hardware and wiring harness) will work in a
987.2
?
thanks!!!!!
Not exactly sure what you include in the term "adapter kit". Assuming you mean a 2-din conversion with wiring harness and face-plate (and miscellaneous stuff). get the Euromotorspeed kit (sold by
Suncoast
or on ebay). BTW, the biggest difference between gen I and II is the color. There's also a slight difference in the harness pin-out. The kit includes pretty good instructions and comes with very good live (phone) support.
This will work with practically* 2-DIN aftermarket headunits. It is more complicated (and expensive) if your car has
Bose
.
*the reason for "practically" is there may be clearance problems with unusually deep headunits. There also needs to be room for air circulation to cool the unit.
Thanks.. I guess I should have been clearer.
Suncoast
told me the "kit" for double din including faceplate, wiring harness , etc has been discontinued. They don't have any. I do not have
Bose
and so far the only kits I've been able to readily find are for 2005-2008. The color doesn't matter to me. I just need to know if it would work. I am replacing my head unit with a
pioneer
4200nex which has a removable faceplate. Don't need nav or cameras (don't have them now anyway).
It's still available on ebay. Sounds like you have a
987.2
. Here's a link.
Euro-Motorspeed
Update: After a quick look I didn't see any gen-2 kits. Send a message to the seller and ask. I know Loi and I'm sure he can help you.
So, here's another question. My audio guy says some of the boxsters/
caymans
use fiber optic. Huge difference in price. With a base, I don't have an amp so I'm seriously doubting I have fiber optic. How can you tell without pulling the stereo?
He also mentioned that they might have to bypass something (I don't recall what that something was) and they'd have to install new wiring to the speakers but again having a base, I doubt seriously have I anything special that requires that.
Thanks for all the help!
First, to be clear - you said you don't have
Bose
, but what yr/model car do you have? If it is an 'S', I believe it came with Sound Package Plus (SPP). SPP was also an option on a base car. SPP has an external amp to drive the additional speakers. The base car with the standard system only has 4 speakers (those dash/center/rear grills are empty).
It sounds like your audio guy is blowing smoke. If you don't have
Bose
, you won't need new speakers. Some people take this opportunity to upgrade them, but it really isn't necessary if they are in good shape.
That's correct. No
Bose
, No amp. Base car, not an S. No rear speakers, just in the door and in the dash. I have a 2011
Boxster
. I told him I didn't think I had fiber optic and just needed the $35 wiring harness and the double-din adapter kit.
Then you're on the right track. It's the same basic setup as my car (2010
Cayman
). Nothing very sophisticated unless you feel like upgrading everything. I found just replacing the headunit improved the sound tremendously and added lots of features that were missing from my CDR30.
The kit will need to include a
Porsche
specific bezel to fill the near-trapezoid opening in the dash. You said color doesn't matter but realize that the bezel that goes around the radio face will not match the color of the A/C control and switches stacked below the radio. I think it would look kinda odd.
Check Crutchfield - I think they have those kits now.
I'm also debating about the door speakers. I'm eyeballing a set of Polk DB5251's to replace the woofer/tweeter in the doors. However, I am planning on leaving the dash speakers alone. I assume that will work? These Polks I found are marine types and handle moisture a little better (so I read)
