Before I have replaced my speakers (SP+), I had a setup based on the original HU PCM3 and the original SP+ speakers, but the SP+ amplifier was replaced by a preaty High-End DSP/5-channel power amps + sub.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello fellas
I am new here. Bought a
Boxster
987 couple a weeks ago. Love the car but the sound system is horrific.
I believe I have soundpackage plus in my car. In eBay there seems to be lots of
BOSE speakers
and amps available. I have been thinking of just a slight factory upgrade: From ASK to
Bose
. I really like the car to be as original as possible
1) Is it possible to swap the excisting sound package speakers to
Bose speakers
design for
Boxster
anyways?
2) Do I need other changes too like buying a
Bose amp
too?
Thanks
I have Sound Package Plus as well but in a
Cayman
. The existing speakers are actually reasonably good and in my humble opinion NOT the problem. The head units are atrocious in these cars and would never have known that had I not swapped mine out. There are 9 speakers with that package in a small cabin. 4 of which are 4.5 inches or more. I ended up purchasing a double din JVC Bluetooth unit from
Crutchfield
for under $100. The sound difference was nothing short of amazing. I hear instruments clearly I never heard before. Extremely crisp and clear. The best way I can describe it is everything seemed to be played through a sponge with the previous OEM stereo and now it isn't. I plan no further audio upgrades. I am extremely satisfied/pleased. I was only looking to add
iPhone
streaming and Bluetooth connectivity to my car and got one helluva pleasant surprise in sound.
If I am wrong you can always swap out speakers later but just start with a quality head unit first.

Thanks PHLonomenal! I forgot to mention that I have a navi too but that shouldn't be a problem? I have been thinking of Zenec which is build to fit directly to
Boxster
but seems a bit pricey for me. Spent all my money to purchase the car lol
I have the SP+ in my 09
Boxster
and the HU was horrible. I had the HU replaced with the
Kenwood
Excelon DNN992 unit. They also took off the door card panels and installed
Dynamat
Super Lite in three separate layers to tighten up the sound in the doors. End result with the factory speakers and the factory amp (located under the passenger seat) was terrific. I may replace those down the road, but for now, I'm extremely happy with the result. Even with the top down the speakers are punchy and rock solid.
These OEM head units are beyond horrible for a variety of reasons but all is forgiven because
Porsche
is not a car stereo company.

I did the same and my experience has been exactly as yours. Changing the head unit does not turn your stereo into a Bang & Olufsen system but it is quite dramatic. The weak point is certainly there and should be the starting point of any upgrade. It's garbage

The speakers themselve are not the problem. The problem is the source. Before I have replaced my speakers (SP+), I had a setup based on the original HU PCM3 and the original SP+ speakers, but the SP+ amplifier was replaced by a preaty High-End DSP/5-channel power amps + sub. The sound was really very good!
So if you don't want replace the HU or speaker, a small multichanel amp with integrated DSP (like Audison 8.9 bit) could be the best upgrade
Most people do just the opposite and want to get rid of their HU and
Bose
,which is what i did.new amp, keep speakers and wiring, new HU. Added back up camera. Now i have good (not audiophile) sound, HD,XM, BT, NAV, backup camera, modern system for under $750
Also, since you have a
boxster
, like me, if you get a new HU try to find one that had a knob for volume and a real button or two because of you drive a lot with top down, glare can make screens wash out
As others mentioned, it's all about the poor head unit. I wonder who they consulted when making that thing.
Best to replace the head unit unless you have a lot of integrated options such as universal audio interface and bluetooth for phone. I kept my HU and just stuffed the
Bose sub
. It's aite understanding it's not a home system. I don't think the cabin allows for a true music experience anyway. The road noise plus engine can drown it out depending on your speed. My 19s are not that forgiving to the music.
There is no free amp chanel in SPP for the Subwoofer, this means you need the
Bose Sub
(or any other aftermarket sub) and additional amp which would drive this subwoofer
Thanks man, so I guess changing the amp to
bose amp
would do the trick too? I once tried to upgrade the soundsystem in my previous zed but found it impossible in the end. Even with a factory devices. So I am certainly not willing to do that mistake again lol
I don't think it works with
Bose amp
that easy because of the different kind of connection between the Head Unit and the SPP resp.
Bose amplifier
. But you could keep the SPP amp as it is and simply use any additional cheap, small mono or bridged stereo amp, which would drive the subwoofer only. There are anough amps, which are small anough to fit e.g. under the seat. The imput signal would be grabbed from the woofers. Therefor It is important to get an amp with highlevel inputs (loudspeaker level), autosense functionality (no need for extra remote signal) and suitable LoPass filter (50-250Hz)
